Why teachers and institution staff leave and how to understand why
Faculty, administrative and support staff leave for different reasons. How to ask what shaped their decision and act on it within the academic calendar.
7 min readRead articleA study abroad consultancy guides students through course choice, applications, funding and visas for foreign universities. It runs on counsellors who sell and advise, documentation staff who check files, and deadlines set by overseas intakes.

Not sure what you need? Tell us about your business in six short steps and we will come to the first meeting prepared.
Share your requirementsA study abroad consultancy helps students choose a country, a course and a university, then prepares applications, funding papers and visa files. The team has counsellors who meet families and sell the service, application officers who fill forms and track offers, documentation staff who check marksheets and bank papers, and a few who handle test coaching referrals. Work rises before each intake and slows after it. Families share passports, marksheets and financial papers, so careless handling is a serious risk. Counsellors are paid on targets, often with commission, and pitched against rival agencies promising easy admissions. Mistakes such as a missed deadline or a wrong document can cost a student a year, and the family blames the consultant. For the wider sector view, read HR for education.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
GullyHR runs talent acquisition for permanent roles in study abroad consultants. For each role we agree the job description with you, find and screen candidates against it, and support the offer through to joining. Tell us the role and the number of people, and we start there.
We recruit permanent employees. We do not supply contract or temporary staff.
Every business interviews, but few have a written process that works the same way for every role and every interviewer. GullyHR designs yours, from the role brief to the offer, trains your managers to run it, and can run it for you on the roles you hand us.
We agree what the role must deliver, the must-have and nice-to-have skills, and how each will be scored.
Screening call, assessment, interview rounds and decision points, sized to the role and the number of people you hire.
Structured questions for each role family and a rating guide, so two interviewers judge the same answer the same way.
A short briefing for your managers on what to ask, what to avoid and how to give a clear yes or no.
Who approves, how the offer is made, and how candidates are kept informed from first call to joining.
Pressure to close admissions encourages a quick yes. Students end up in courses that do not fit, and complaints follow months later.
Before a deadline, officers handle dozens of files at once. A missed form or an expired document shows up only when the university replies.
Passports, marksheets and bank statements move around by email and phone. A leaver or a careless device puts private papers at risk.
The person who knows a country's changing requirements keeps notes in a notebook. When she leaves, mistakes repeat.
A counsellor says that a visa is certain or a university will accept. The final decision rests elsewhere and the family returns angry.
Counsellors argue over who brought an enquiry, who closed it and who is paid when a student changes plans.
A counsellor leaves and another picks up fifty open files with half-written notes. Students receive contradictory advice.
Staff are hired before an intake and let go after. Newcomers learn on live files and the best experienced hands leave for rivals.

Give them approved wording, review a sample of conversations and link rewards to students who stay satisfied, not only to sign-ups. The decision belongs to universities and visa authorities.
With a handover note, a shared file system and a second named contact per file, a transition is smooth. Without them, students are left in limbo.
Keep them in one controlled place, limit access by role and remove it on exit. Avoid passing passports by chat. Confirm legal duties with your adviser.
Write who gets credit for which stage and when commission is earned, then apply it the same way to everyone. Most disputes come from unwritten rules.
Look at last year's peak files per officer and the errors found. Hire early enough to train, not in the week of the deadline.
We would look at how counsellors are rewarded and what they promise, how files are handed over and how student papers are handled. A sensible first job is a file checklist and a commission rule note. Wider work is scoped after we speak and agreed in writing before it starts.
