Why automotive employees leave and how to understand why
Technicians, service advisors and sales consultants leave for different reasons. How to ask what shaped their decision and act on it across every outlet.
8 min readRead articleAutomotive plastics makers mould bumpers, dashboards, trims and under-bonnet parts that must match in colour and fit. A mould change or a colour batch drifting is what the floor worries about, and a good moulding setter is hard to find.

Not sure what you need? Tell us about your business in six short steps and we will come to the first meeting prepared.
Share your requirementsAn automotive plastics maker moulds and finishes parts such as bumpers, dashboards, door trims, covers, lamp housings and under-bonnet components. Pellets are dried and moulded on injection machines of different sizes, and parts then go to trimming, painting or printing, assembly and inspection. A moulding setter chooses settings, loads the mould and brings the machine to a good part. A mould change can take hours, so planning it matters. Customers judge colour, gloss, gaps and fit by eye, and a small cosmetic fault means rejection. Moulding runs continuously, so shifts are long and operators watch many machines. Mould maintenance and paint shop staff form small, critical groups. See also HR for automotive businesses.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
A skilled setter brings a mould to a good part quickly, and a new setter can lose hours and material doing the same job.
Inspectors disagree on what is an acceptable mark, so parts are passed by one person and rejected by another.
One operator may tend several presses plus trimming, and attention to part quality drops late in the shift.
A small team keeps moulds healthy, and when one is on leave moulds run until they fail and then stop the line.
Colour, thickness and finish vary with the painter, and the paint shop is a place where fumes and cleanliness matter.
Pressure to shorten cycles brings short shots, flash and warping, then rework and rejection.

Start operators on loading and simple changes, then step them up to more complex moulds with a senior setter checking. A written ladder with pay steps keeps them interested.
Use physical boundary samples agreed with the customer and review disagreements together. Re-check with the same samples every few months.
It depends on the part and the cycle, but review the quality record against the load. If faults rise with the number of machines, the load is too high.
Train a second person on routine care and keep a written service schedule. A single point of failure is a risk to the whole line.
Often it does. Short shots, flash and warping follow when cycles are cut too far. Agree cycle times with setters and review them when rejects rise.
We would count how many setters can change each key mould, compare how two inspectors judge the same parts, and see how many machines each operator tends. A good first piece of work is a setter grade ladder and a boundary sample board. Scope is agreed in writing afterwards.
