Why teachers and institution staff leave and how to understand why
Faculty, administrative and support staff leave for different reasons. How to ask what shaped their decision and act on it within the academic calendar.
7 min readRead articleA tutoring platform matches students with tutors for live one-to-one or small-group lessons. The business rests on a large pool of tutors who work when they choose and on a small team that selects, trains and checks them.

Not sure what you need? Tell us about your business in six short steps and we will come to the first meeting prepared.
Share your requirementsA tutoring platform sells lessons by the hour: school subjects, exam help, spoken English, coding for children, music or hobby classes. A tutor may be a graduate, a teacher with years of experience, or a student earning on the side, and most take sessions in the evening and at weekends. The platform team handles recruitment, trial classes, matching, scheduling, parent calls and replacement when a tutor drops out. Tutors are paid per session, so their income follows how many hours they get. Parents judge the platform through one tutor, and a bad hour is remembered for months. The wider edtech and online education hub and the education sector page give the background.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
Hundreds apply, few teach well, and most selection is a quick call that tells you little about how the person explains.
A tutor takes up a student, then drops after an exam or a job offer, and the platform scrambles for a replacement.
Parents write in when something goes wrong, and the team knows little about the hundreds of sessions that went by quietly.
A tutor with a gap in bookings earns nothing for a week, and good ones start to take students from the platform directly.
Terms on non-solicitation, conduct with children and use of materials are accepted on a screen and rarely read.
Tutors who rely on the payout notice every delay, and word spreads quickly in tutor groups.
Staff handle angry parents and tutor excuses all evening, and many leave within a year.

Watch them teach. A ten minute demo with a student or a staff member playing one shows how they explain, listen and correct. Score on a sheet with two reviewers and compare notes before offering.
Common causes are uneven bookings, late payment, difficult parents and a better offer. Ask leavers directly and look at how many sessions they had in the first month. Steady early bookings keep people longer.
Review a weekly sample using recordings or short observations, a student rating and the number of reschedules. Treat patterns across weeks as the signal, not any single class.
A clear, fair rule helps, and so does making the platform worth staying on through steady bookings, timely pay and support. Take advice from a qualified professional on how to word restrictions.
Give them scripts for hard calls, share the load across evening shifts, rotate difficult queues and listen to their patterns. Their notes are the best early warning of tutor problems.
We would ask how many tutors from last quarter still teach, how you check sessions today, and what a parent complaint usually concerns. A good first project is a demo class and scoring sheet plus a one-page set of tutor rules. Scope is written down for you to accept or change.
