Recruitment process consulting for Tutoring Platforms: demo classes, scoring sheets and a bench by subject
A tutoring platform needs many tutors and cannot afford many poor ones. Selection works best when candidates teach a short demo class that two reviewers score on the same sheet.

Share your requirementsWhy recruitment process consulting matters in tutoring platforms
Most platforms screen by qualification and a phone call. The call tells you whether the candidate sounds pleasant and knows the topic. It does not tell you whether the person can slow down for a nervous ten year old or spot why a student keeps making the same mistake. Poor matches then show up as parent complaints.
A demo class changes the quality of selection. Ten minutes, a real topic, a staff member playing a student. Two reviewers score on a shared sheet covering clarity, patience, checking understanding and use of the screen. Those who pass go into a bench listed by subject, class level, language and available hours.
How to set it up
1. Define what a good tutor looks like
Write a short profile by subject and level: qualification, language, evening availability, comfort with children and tools. Keep it to one page.
2. Run a ten minute demo class
Give the candidate a topic a day ahead. A staff member plays a student who makes a typical mistake. Observe how the tutor handles it.
3. Score with two reviewers
Use one sheet with four or five points. Reviewers score separately and then talk. Disagreements are worth a second look.
4. Build the bench by subject and level
List selected tutors with subject, level, language, hours available and a start date. Mark who can take urgent replacements.
5. Review selection against results
After three months, compare demo scores with parent ratings and drop-out. Adjust the sheet where the scores did not predict well.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many tutors joined last quarter after a live demo and how many after a call only.
- Ask two reviewers to score the same recorded demo and compare.
- Check how many subjects have fewer than three tutors available in the evening.
- Look at whether any link has been checked between demo score and later ratings.

Questions owners ask
Yes, though fewer will pass. Keep the demo short, schedule it on evenings and weekends and accept that the supply that remains is better. The bench grows steadily and complaints fall.
Both can work. Experienced teachers know pacing; students often connect with younger learners. Judge by the demo and by subject level, not by qualification alone.
Two is usually enough. They give you a check on each other, and a third voice is needed only when they disagree strongly on a candidate.
