Why agribusiness workers leave and how to understand why
Seasonal crews, field officers and processing staff leave for different reasons. How to ask what shaped their decision and act before next season.
7 min readRead articleThese startups mix scientists, engineers and field staff on products that take years to prove. Pay is thin, work is physical or technical, and keeping a small expert team through slow progress is the main people task.

Not sure what you need? Tell us about your business in six short steps and we will come to the first meeting prepared.
Share your requirementsA climate, agriculture, travel or deep technology startup builds something new: a sensor, a battery process, a farm advisory service, a booking platform or a hardware product. Teams are small but mixed. Scientists and engineers work in a lab or workshop. Field staff test with farmers, installers or travellers. Business and operations people deal with partners, customers and funders. Funding can arrive as grants or milestones, so money and jobs rise and fall with results. Pilots run in remote places, with long travel and basic living. The founders may be researchers rather than managers. Rare skills are hard to find and easy to lose, and the work cycle is longer than most employees expect. For the wider sector, see HR for agriculture and agribusiness.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
GullyHR runs talent acquisition for permanent roles in climate, agri, travel and deep tech startups. For each role we agree the job description with you, find and screen candidates against it, and support the offer through to joining. Tell us the role and the number of people, and we start there.
We recruit permanent employees. We do not supply contract or temporary staff.
Every business interviews, but few have a written process that works the same way for every role and every interviewer. GullyHR designs yours, from the role brief to the offer, trains your managers to run it, and can run it for you on the roles you hand us.
We agree what the role must deliver, the must-have and nice-to-have skills, and how each will be scored.
Screening call, assessment, interview rounds and decision points, sized to the role and the number of people you hire.
Structured questions for each role family and a rating guide, so two interviewers judge the same answer the same way.
A short briefing for your managers on what to ask, what to avoid and how to give a clear yes or no.
Who approves, how the offer is made, and how candidates are kept informed from first call to joining.
Months of testing without a visible win wear down the team, and good people start looking elsewhere.
A grant ends or a milestone slips, and the founder must choose between cutting roles or running out of cash.
A founder-scientist handles people in the lab way: little feedback, little structure and vague expectations.
Staff on pilots spend weeks away in villages or sites with poor lodging, no clear allowance and little support.
A specialist in sensors, soil science or battery chemistry is hard to find, and an exit stalls the product.
Base salary is low and equity is the offer, which works for a few and not for those with families to support.
Lab notes, designs and data sit with individuals, and an exit takes knowledge that took years to build.
An engineer also does field work, sales calls and reports, and no one agrees who owns what.

Break the plan into short milestones, share small wins and be honest about delays. People tolerate slow work better than silence.
Tie roles clearly to funding sources, plan the cash months ahead and tell the team early. A planned reduction is kinder than a sudden one.
Keep notes and designs in shared stores, require handover notes and write IP and confidentiality terms with a qualified professional.
Agree a daily allowance, travel and lodging standards, and a clear return plan. Write them in plain words before the first trip.
Be clear on the mission, the learning and the equity, and be honest about risk. Some people join for exactly that.
We would ask which roles depend on which funding, where lab knowledge is stored and how field trips are supported. A good first project is a milestone plan with role terms and a know-how store. Scope is written for you to accept or change.
