Why automotive employees leave and how to understand why
Technicians, service advisors and sales consultants leave for different reasons. How to ask what shaped their decision and act on it across every outlet.
8 min readRead articleSelling trucks and building bodies on chassis means long sales cycles, skilled fabrication and bays that are either full or idle. Here is how to staff it steadily.

Not sure what you need? Tell us about your business in six short steps and we will come to the first meeting prepared.
Share your requirementsA truck or trailer business sells to fleet owners, transporters and small operators, and often builds the body, container, tipper or tanker on the chassis in its own yard. The people include sales executives who visit transporters and arrange finance, fabricators, welders and fitters in a body-building shop, painters, designers or draftsmen, service technicians, spare parts staff and yard supervisors. Orders come in lumps, a fleet of ten vehicles one month and little the next, and delivery commitments run to the customer's date. Skilled welders and fitters are hard to find and tend to move between yards. Work is hot, heavy and at height, so safety is a real concern. See also HR for automotive businesses.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
A fabricator with a good hand is offered more by another yard, and a half-finished order is left with whoever remains.
A large fleet order needs twice the crew for six weeks, and nobody wants to hire permanently for a one-off peak.
The shop learns the date after the customer does, and overtime becomes the way to meet it.
Welding, grinding and lifting go on all day, and protective gear is used unevenly across crews.
An executive may work a transporter for months, and commission arrives so late it stops motivating him.
Service technicians are called out for vehicles on the highway, and the work is spread unevenly between them.
A draftsman or senior supervisor holds the detail of past builds, and a change of person means rework.
Start with the topics that matter most here: HR Strategy and Workforce Planning; Health, Safety and Wellbeing; Compensation, Payroll and Benefits. Then work through the rest. Each topic is written for automotive, not in general.

Salary structure, payroll inputs and a month that closes on time.
Structure, reporting lines and who is allowed to decide what.

Named backups for the roles that cannot be vacant.

Two routes — one for complaints, one for conduct — kept separate.
Policies a manager can apply, and obligations with owners and dates.
Who leaves, when, why — and which of them mattered.
Resignation to relieving letter, in a defined order.
Records that survive people, and approvals that do not queue.

Hold a steady core, forecast the order book each quarter and bring in extra hands for named periods under terms you have thought through. Ask a qualified professional about the arrangements that suit your situation.
Grade skill honestly, pay for it, keep the work area safe and avoid the pattern of constant overtime. Most skilled people leave for a better offer or a better shop.
Only after the shop has checked capacity. A shared order sheet with a shop-confirmed date removes most of the late scrambles.
Split the incentive across stages: confirmation, delivery and collection. It recognises the months of effort and also protects you from unpaid receivables.
Protective equipment that fits and is used, supervised lifting, fire precautions near welding and a record of incidents. Confirm the legal requirements with a qualified professional.
We would look at how crews are planned against the order book, who promises delivery dates, and how welders and fabricators are graded. Safety in the shop and the long lag on sales incentives would also come up. A practical first piece of work is linking delivery dates to what the shop can build, plus a staged incentive for sales. We then confirm scope in writing.
