Share your requirementsA speech and language therapy clinic works with children who are late to talk or have difficulty with speech, language or stammering, and with adults who have lost speech after a stroke or need help with voice and swallowing. A typical clinic employs speech and language therapists, sometimes with audiologists, special educators and psychologists, and a front desk. Sessions are short and frequent, often with a parent in the room who is taught to continue exercises at home. Therapists prepare materials, write reports for schools and doctors and sometimes visit schools or homes. Many clinics run group sessions and online sessions too. See also HR for healthcare. What makes HR different here is the three-way relationship between therapist, child and parent: progress depends on the parent's effort between sessions, so a therapist's skill in coaching and reporting counts as much as the therapy itself.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
Parents want quick results, and a therapist without a clear way to explain slow progress faces complaints and drop-outs.
Progress reports, school letters and session materials are prepared after hours, and therapists feel their real workload is not counted.
Online sessions help access but blur working hours, and therapists answer messages from parents late into the evening.
Fresh graduates start with full caseloads and no mentor, and the quality of their sessions varies.
A group needs a lead therapist and an assistant, and when one is absent the group is merged or cancelled.
Experienced therapists see little difference in pay from newer ones, and the best are drawn to hospitals, schools or their own practice.

Set expectations at the first meeting, agree on goals in plain terms and share a short written summary at each review. Therapists need training and a script for these conversations.
Put it in the schedule, a fixed block each day or week. If it is left to evenings, workload is hidden and tired staff leave.
Set agreed hours and route routine queries through the front desk. Therapists who are always reachable tend to burn out.
A mentor, a lighter caseload at first, case discussion each week and a review after a few months. Learning on full load shows in session quality and parent trust.
Offer a grade ladder with clear criteria, recognition for senior work such as mentoring and pay that is checked against the market each year.
Typically the unpaid hours therapists spend on reports and materials, how parents are told about progress, and whether newer therapists have a mentor and a lighter first month. Messages answered after hours would be on the list as well. A good first piece of work is a parent communication standard or a pay and grade ladder. We agree scope in writing afterwards.
