Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- A patient arrives without an appointment while the doctor is fully booked. What do you do?
- How do you handle an upset patient who has waited a long time?
- Tell us how you would reduce missed appointments at a busy clinic.
- What would you do if a relative asks you for another patient's test result?
- Describe a time you handled several tasks at once at a counter or help desk.
- How would you explain a delay to a senior patient who is not comfortable with phones?
Hiring tips for this role
- Run a short role play at the counter. Test tone, patience and how the candidate handles a booking clash.
- Check phone manner on a call, not only in person. Many first impressions of a clinic happen on the phone.
- Test data entry with a few sample patient records and see how many errors the candidate leaves.
- Explain the confidentiality expectation at the start and ask how they would handle a request for another patient's details.
