Ward Attendant job description

A Ward Attendant supports nurses and patients in a hospital ward by moving patients, keeping beds and rooms ready, and running small errands. The role keeps ward care smooth and clean.

An HR consultant and business owner reviewing employee records together

Why the role exists

Nurses in a hospital ward cannot leave patients to carry samples, change bedding or wheel someone to radiology. The Ward Attendant does these tasks. In an Indian hospital the attendant usually works in shifts, reports to the ward in-charge and works with nurses, housekeeping and the diagnostics team.

What the person does

  • Shift patients between ward, radiology, operating theatre and discharge using a wheelchair or stretcher safely.
  • Prepare beds with fresh linen after each discharge and report any damaged mattresses or bed rails.
  • Carry blood and other samples to the laboratory in the correct container and hand over with the right slip.
  • Collect medicines, consumables and files from the pharmacy and stores as the nurse requests.
  • Help patients with feeding, bathing and toileting under nurse direction, with respect for their privacy.
  • Follow hand hygiene, waste segregation and linen handling steps as set by the infection control team.
  • Answer the call bell quickly and pass patient needs to the nurse on duty without delay.
  • Keep the ward store, trolleys and utility room tidy and report low stock to the in-charge.

Skills and tools

  • Safe patient lifting and transfer using stretcher or wheelchair
  • Basic hygiene and biomedical waste segregation practice
  • Following nurse instructions accurately and reporting back
  • Respectful, patient manner with sick and elderly people
  • Reading ward names, bed numbers and sample slips correctly
  • Physical stamina for a full shift on foot
  • Understanding of Hindi, English and the local language of patients
  • Basic care of ward equipment and trolleys

Education and experience

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

  • Preferred school completion or equivalent experience in a hospital or care setting.
  • Preferred short hospital attendant or patient care training, or equivalent experience on a ward.
  • Preferred prior experience in a hospital, nursing home or elder care, or willingness to be trained.
  • Any health check or vaccination expected depends on the employer; confirm with your own adviser.

How the work is judged

  • Time taken to move patients and samples without delays or mix-ups.
  • Readiness of beds and ward areas after each discharge.
  • Adherence to hygiene and waste handling steps seen in ward checks.
  • Feedback from nurses and patients on helpfulness and conduct.
  • Attendance and punctuality across the shift roster.

Where the role can lead

  • Move up to Senior Ward Attendant or Patient Transport Supervisor.
  • Train further to become a Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Assistant.
  • Take on a stores or housekeeping supervisor role in the hospital.

Interview questions to ask

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.

  1. A patient asks to go to the toilet while you are carrying a sample to the laboratory. What do you do?
  2. How would you move a patient who is in pain and weak from the bed to a stretcher?
  3. Tell us about a time you worked night shifts or long hours. How did you stay alert and careful?
  4. A patient's family member shouts at you for a delay. How do you respond?
  5. What would you do if you notice a patient looks very unwell and the nurse is not nearby?
  6. How do you make sure a sample reaches the right laboratory with the right slip?

Hiring tips for this role

  • Test the lifting and transfer method in a practical round. Poor technique hurts patients and the attendant and is hard to correct later.
  • Check conduct with sick and anxious people, not only strength. Ask how the person handled difficult attendants in earlier work.
  • Contact two previous supervisors in hospitals or care homes. Honesty and reliability with samples and belongings matter more than speed.
  • Be clear about night shifts and rotation at the offer stage. Many attendants leave when the shift pattern was not explained.

Questions about hiring a ward attendant

A ward attendant mainly moves patients and items and keeps the ward ready. A nursing assistant gives more direct patient care under a nurse. The tasks allowed depend on the employer and its own rules.
