Why manufacturing employees leave and how to understand why
Operators, technicians and supervisors leave for reasons that sit in shifts, skills and supervision. How to ask, read the pattern by shift and act on it.

Share your requirementsA hydraulic component maker machines cylinder barrels, rods, valve blocks and manifolds, hones bores to a fine finish, chrome plates or hardens rods, and assembles with seals, pistons and fittings in a clean bay. Every unit goes on a test bench for pressure and leak checks. Customers include machine builders, mobile equipment makers and repair shops, with a mix of standard items and custom designs. Honing and seal fitting are skills that take time to learn, and one scratched bore or cut seal can send a unit back from the customer. See also HR for manufacturing.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
Finish and size depend on stone choice and feel. A new operator spoils barrels before gaining confidence.
A nicked seal looks fine and fails under pressure at the customer site, so the fitter carries a quiet responsibility.
Dirt in a hydraulic unit shortens its life, but cleanliness rules are dropped when orders pile up.
Special cylinders need new drawings and fresh trials, and a few engineers and fitters absorb the load.
A person who rushes or accepts a slow leak passes a poor unit, yet the role gets little recognition.
Returns arrive without proper facts, and the plant argues about whether the fault was in making or use.
Start with the topics that matter most here: Learning and Development; Performance Management; Compensation, Payroll and Benefits. Then work through the rest. Each topic is written for manufacturing, not in general.

Start with trial barrels on a defined plan, with a senior watching and signing off each stage. Accept some scrap in the plan and set the limit.
Train and test fitters on the right tools and technique, and check a sample of units. Keep a list of who is cleared.
Keep the check as a fixed step at shift start with the supervisor signing. If it is skipped once, it will be skipped again.
Give them a small team and a clear handover once the design is proven, so the standard line is not disturbed.
Record the unit, test results and finding for each return. Share the cases so that causes are fixed instead of argued over.
We would ask how new honing operators are trained and how much they scrap, how seal fitters are tested, and who runs the test bench. A good first piece of work is a honing and seal fitter ladder with sign-offs. Scope is agreed in writing afterwards.
