Why manufacturing employees leave and how to understand why
Operators, technicians and supervisors leave for reasons that sit in shifts, skills and supervision. How to ask, read the pattern by shift and act on it.

Share your requirementsA maker of industrial cleaning chemicals blends degreasers, descalers, floor cleaners, sanitisers and machine wash liquids, and sells them to factories, kitchens, hotels, laundries and housekeeping contractors. The plant has blending tanks, filling lines for cans, drums and bulk containers, and a small lab. The range is wide, with many pack sizes and labels, so changeovers and packing errors are common. Sales go through dealers and distributors, and direct accounts need demonstrations of a product on the customer's own surface or machine. Orders come as many small repeats with the odd large tender. Acid and alkali products are handled by hand, so protective gear and handling habits matter. Packing is where most workers are and where most mistakes occur. See also HR for manufacturing.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
Many sizes and labels, and a rush to dispatch, lead to wrong labels, wrong caps and returns from customers.
Splashes and fumes happen at transfer and filling, and gloves, goggles and aprons are skipped on hot days.
A dealer's team may push a rival product if the commission is better, and you manage them without owning them.
The executive who can clean a stubborn surface in front of a buyer is rare, and cannot be everywhere.
Before festivals and cleaning seasons, daily workers are added who do not know the hazards of the products they fill.
A customer promised a delivery date by the desk finds the plant has not planned that product.
Start with the topics that matter most here: Health, Safety and Wellbeing; Onboarding and Probation; Compensation, Payroll and Benefits. Then work through the rest. Each topic is written for manufacturing, not in general.
Induction, records, incident reporting and follow-through.
A first day that is the same for the fifth joiner as the first.
Salary structure, payroll inputs and a month that closes on time.
How many people, in which roles, by when — and what they will cost.
Structure, reporting lines and who is allowed to decide what.
Requisition to joining, the same way every time.
Records, attendance, leave and the day-to-day HR that must simply work.
Goals, reviews and ratings that hold up in a conversation.
Training planned from need rather than from the calendar.
Named backups for the roles that cannot be vacant.
Communication, recognition and the conditions people actually work in.
Two routes — one for complaints, one for conduct — kept separate.
Policies a manager can apply, and obligations with owners and dates.
Who leaves, when, why — and which of them mattered.
Resignation to relieving letter, in a defined order.
Records that survive people, and approvals that do not queue.
A short monthly pack management actually reads.

Use a line clearance by a second person at every changeover and make the label check a separate step. Record errors by line to see patterns.
Give clear targets, a fair incentive and regular visits. Dealers respond to support and prompt payment, not only to price.
Have them shadow the best person, practise on real surfaces and get feedback. Keep a written method for the common jobs.
Set gear by task, issue it at the start of the shift and have supervisors check it. Review near misses weekly.
Plan early, brief on hazards before work and pair newcomers with an experienced packer. Keep a list of good seasonal workers to call again.
We would count your wrong label returns by line, walk the filling line for gear and ask dealers how they see your products. A good first piece of work is a changeover check and a seasonal packer briefing. Scope is then agreed in writing.
