Share your requirementsA nutraceutical manufacturer makes dietary supplements and health foods as tablets, capsules, softgels, powders, gummies and drinks. Many of its orders come from brands that sell online or through retail and want a fresh formula quickly, in small runs and varied packs. The plant blends ingredients, fills or compresses, and packs into jars, sachets or pouches, with weighing and blending rooms held clean. New products are common, so setups change often and recipe sheets multiply. Growth in the sector means rapid hiring of floor staff, many of them new to a controlled production space. Product development staff, who work with brands on formulas, and a small quality team carry the most knowledge. See also HR for pharmaceuticals and life sciences.
These are the places the people side of this kind of business tends to give way. The rest of this page works through them.
HR here has to work for each of these groups, not only the office. The set-up below is written with all of them in mind.
Many new hires have never worked in a clean production room, and basic hygiene habits must be taught every time.
Many brands order small lots, so setters and packers spend more time changing than running.
Account managers promise dates the plant sees only after the order lands, and the plan is rebuilt around a new product.
A formulator who understands brand briefs is in demand, and brands may follow them to a rival.
Allergens and strong ingredients are in the same rooms, and a lapse in cleaning and labelling is a serious fault.
Records are kept by a few people, and as headcount grows they are not passed on.
Start with the topics that matter most here: Onboarding and Probation; Learning and Development; Retention and Attrition Management. Then work through the rest. Each topic is written for pharmaceuticals and life sciences, not in general.

Use a fixed first week plan with hygiene teaching, a buddy and a short sign-off. Do not leave it to the line.
Group products into families, give each team a family and plan runs to reduce changes. Track the time spent on changes.
Agree a single launch sheet before a date is given. Include sales, development and the plant.
Give them ownership of projects, a clear path and market level pay. Talk regularly about what they want.
Name an owner and a backup for each record type, and review the list each quarter so nothing sits with one person.
We would count your recent joiners and look at what their first week was, check which product families take longest to set up and ask how launch dates are agreed. A good first piece of work is a first week hygiene plan and a shared launch sheet. Scope is then agreed in writing.
