Insurance Advisor job description

An Insurance Advisor helps individuals, families or employers choose health, life or general insurance, explains the cover and exclusions honestly and supports them at renewal and claims time.

An HR consultant and business owner reviewing employee records together

Why the role exists

The Insurance Advisor works with an insurance broker, a corporate agency or an insurer's sales team and reports to a sales or branch manager. The role may serve individual customers or employers buying group health and employee benefits. Trust and clear explanation matter more than quick sales.

What the person does

  • Meet or call prospects, learn about family, income, existing cover and health needs, and note what protection is missing.
  • Compare plans from the insurers the firm works with and explain premium, cover, waiting periods and exclusions in simple terms.
  • Help customers fill in proposal forms accurately, including medical history, so that later claims are not disputed.
  • For employer clients, understand headcount, age mix and claims history and present group health or accident options to the HR head.
  • Track renewals and remind customers well before the due date, comparing the renewal terms with other options.
  • Support customers during claims by guiding on documents, cashless steps and follow-up with the insurer or the claims desk.
  • Keep CRM records of every advice session, quote and consent, so the firm can show what was explained.
  • Join product training, share customer feedback with the manager and stay updated on changes in plans and process.

Skills and tools

  • Knowledge of health, term life, motor and personal accident products sold in India
  • Explaining waiting periods, sub-limits, co-pay and exclusions in plain language
  • Needs analysis based on family structure, income and existing cover
  • Quote comparison tools and insurer portals for issuing and renewing policies
  • Group health basics such as employee census, family definitions and claims ratio review
  • CRM and renewal tracking for a growing book of customers
  • Ethical selling, including clear disclosure and refusing unsuitable sales
  • Communication in English and the local language, with patience for first-time buyers

Education and experience

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

  • Graduate in any stream preferred, or equivalent experience in insurance sales, advisory or customer service.
  • Prior experience in health or life insurance sales or employee benefits advisory is preferred.
  • The licence or registration needed to advise or sell depends on the employer, product and facts; confirm it with the employer's own adviser.
  • Good listening skills and comfort with numbers are more useful than a particular degree.

How the work is judged

  • Quality of advice, judged by suitability reviews and low early cancellations or mis-selling complaints
  • Renewal retention across the assigned book, as set by the company
  • Customer feedback on clarity of explanation and help at claim time
  • Completeness of records for advice, quotes and customer consent
  • Contribution to the firm's book of business through fair sales, within its own targets

Where the role can lead

  • Senior Insurance Advisor for larger individual or corporate clients
  • Employee Benefits Consultant or Corporate Insurance Manager at a broker
  • Sales Manager leading a team of advisors, or claims advocacy and servicing roles

Interview questions to ask

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.

  1. A family of four with one earning member asks for the cheapest plan. How do you advise them?
  2. How do you explain waiting periods and exclusions to a customer who wants only cover and low premium?
  3. A customer hid a past illness on the form. What do you tell them and what do you record?
  4. Tell us how you handled a rejected claim for a customer you advised.
  5. For a twenty-person company, what information do you collect before suggesting a group health plan?
  6. How do you decide when to recommend a different insurer at renewal?

Hiring tips for this role

  • Test the honesty of the advice. Give a case where the best product earns less commission and see what the candidate recommends.
  • Check regulatory status early. The licence or registration depends on the employer and the product, so confirm with your own adviser.
  • Ask for renewal and claims stories, not only sales numbers. Advisors who vanish after the sale damage your reputation.
  • For group health, check exposure to employer HR heads. Presenting to an HR head needs different skills than family selling.

Questions about hiring a insurance advisor

The person helps customers pick suitable insurance, explains terms in plain words, issues the policy and supports renewals and claims. For employers, the advisor also handles group health and benefits.
