Delivery Executive job description
A Delivery Executive collects parcels from a hub or warehouse and delivers them to customers on a set route. They handle proof of delivery, cash on delivery and failed attempts for a courier or last-mile logistics firm.

Why the role exists
Last-mile delivery is where a logistics business meets its customer. The Delivery Executive takes parcels from the hub each morning and delivers within the planned window. In India this usually means a two-wheeler, narrow lanes and mobile app scanning. They report to the hub or delivery manager.
What the person does
- Collect the day's parcels from the hub, scan them against the manifest and report any shortage or damage before leaving.
- Load parcels in drop order so the first stops sit nearest and nothing is crushed or left behind.
- Call customers before arrival, confirm the address and landmark, and deliver within the promised window.
- Capture proof of delivery on the handheld app using OTP, signature or photo, as the client requires.
- Collect cash on delivery accurately and deposit it at the hub with the correct receipts each evening.
- Mark failed attempts with the right reason and return undelivered parcels to the hub for reattempt planning.
- Handle pickups and returns from customers and check parcels against the return request.
- Keep the two-wheeler or van in a usable condition and report breakdowns and accidents to the hub manager.
Skills and tools
- Local knowledge of lanes, apartments and landmarks in the delivery zone
- Handheld scanner or delivery app use for scans and proof of delivery
- Safe riding or driving in city and suburban traffic

- Polite phone calls with customers in local language and Hindi or English
- Route sequencing to complete many stops in a shift
- Careful handling of fragile and high-value parcels
- Basic smartphone and navigation app skills
Education and experience
Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

- Preferred prior experience on a delivery route with scanning apps, or equivalent experience in a similar field role.

- Cash on delivery deposited correctly and on time with no unexplained gaps.
- Quality of failed attempt reasons and return handling.
- Customer feedback, damage claims and safe riding record.
Where the role can lead
- Move up to Senior Delivery Executive or Team Lead for a delivery zone.
- Take on hub operations, dispatch or sorting supervisor responsibilities.
- Grow into delivery manager or last-mile operations roles.
Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- You have forty parcels and a hard-to-find address in a new layout. How do you plan the morning?
- A customer is not at home and not answering the phone. What steps do you take before marking a failed attempt?
- Describe how you keep cash on delivery safe and ensure the amount matches the manifest.
- It starts raining heavily and parcels may get wet. What do you do to protect them and still deliver?
- A customer says the parcel is damaged and refuses it. How do you handle it?
- What would you do if your vehicle breaks down halfway through your route?
Hiring tips for this role
- Check local area knowledge with a quick test of landmarks in your delivery zone. Newcomers to the city need longer to reach full productivity.
- Confirm riding or driving ability through a short test and ask about past accidents. Safe riding protects people, parcels and your brand.
- Ask how cash on delivery was handled earlier. Gaps in cash accounts are a common cause of exits, so set clear daily deposit rules from day one.
- Be honest about hours and peak season workload. Delivery work is physically tiring, and unclear expectations drive early attrition.
Questions about hiring a delivery executive

Identity, address, driving licence and vehicle papers are commonly checked. What exactly applies depends on the employer, the vehicle and the facts, so confirm with your own adviser.
Set a daily deposit routine, use scanned receipts and reconcile every evening. Make the process clear to every executive at joining so mistakes are caught early.
