Who usually fills this role

Typically commerce graduates or experienced stock clerks. Check numeracy, accuracy, system comfort and honesty. Give a mock delivery with short quantity and damaged items and ask what they would record. Check original certificates, references and a short practical task before making an offer.

Skills ladder

Stage 1

New joiner

  • Receives goods and counts them
  • Stacks and labels stock
  • Records receipts

Stage 2

Independent

  • Matches deliveries with purchase orders and notes differences
  • Issues stock to floor with records
  • Runs cycle counts and finds causes of gaps
  • Handles returns and damages

Stage 3

Senior or lead

  • Plans reorder levels with the manager
  • Reduces shrinkage and ageing stock
  • Trains new staff
  • Prepares for audits calmly

Training path

First weeks

  1. 1

    Store layout and codes

The stores head shows stock locations, codes and tags. The joiner finds ten items quickly.

  2. 2

    Receiving process

The joiner receives deliveries beside a senior, checking quantity and condition. Differences are recorded.

  3. 3

    System entry

The joiner enters receipts and issues and the head reviews accuracy daily.

First year

  1. 1

    Cycle counting

The executive learns counting methods and runs counts, tracing differences. Results are reviewed with the manager.

  2. 2

    Returns and damages

The executive learns steps for vendor returns and write-offs, with documents.

  3. 3

    Issue control

The executive learns approvals for transfers and floor issues, reducing leakage.

Towards senior

  1. 1

    Reorder planning

The executive studies fast and slow items with the manager to set reorder points. Stockouts are tracked.

  2. 2

    Shrinkage analysis

The executive investigates shrinkage causes and proposes actions.

  3. 3

    Training

The executive trains a junior and the head reviews.

Performance review

Monthly one-to-one with the store manager after counts, and a written half-yearly review. Keep notes of agreed actions and revisit them at the next review.
