Compensation benchmarking for Goat farms: shepherd pay and kid shares
Goat farm pay mixes cash, food, housing and shares of kids. Benchmarking means comparing the whole package with what nearby farms offer, not just the monthly figure.

Share your requirementsWhy compensation benchmarking matters in goat farms
A shepherd may receive a monthly wage, a share of kids, food, a room and an advance at festivals. A farmhand may receive less cash but fewer duties. When a neighbouring farm offers a little more, comparing is hard because the packages are not alike, so owners either match blindly or lose the person.
Benchmarking here is a simple, local exercise. Write down each role and what it truly costs and gives. Ask a few trusted farmers and former workers what they offer. Then see where your package is stronger, weaker or just different, and decide what to do about the gaps.
How to set it up
1. List every element of pay
For each role, record cash, food, housing, kid shares, festival gifts and advances. Convert in-kind items to a rough value you can compare.
2. Ask three to five nearby farms
Speak to farmers, cooperatives and former workers. Ask what they pay shepherds and farmhands and what else they give.
3. Compare role with role
Set your shepherd against the closest equivalent elsewhere, in terms of duties, herd size and hours. Mark where you are ahead or behind.
4. Decide on the gaps
Fix points that risk losing a key person first. Not every gap needs closing, and some can be met with rest days or housing.
5. Explain it to the workers
Tell each person what their package is and why. Write the share method if you use one, as in the HR documentation style.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Write the full package for your shepherd, including everything in kind.
- Ask two neighbouring farms what they give a shepherd.
- Find out whether any worker has received an offer lately.
- Check that share counting is written and understood.

Questions owners ask
Not automatically. Compare the whole package, duties and hours. If a person is key to the herd, a rise or a better share may be worth it. For others, rest days or housing may matter more.
Use a rough local cost and state it as an estimate for comparison. The aim is not accounting accuracy but a fair view of what the worker receives overall.
They can be, if counts are disputed. Write who counts, when and how mortality is treated, and keep a record signed by both. Confirm any legal points with a qualified professional.
