Learning and development process for Capsule Manufacturers: filling setters and sharp-eyed inspectors
Capsule filling needs setters who can adjust fill weight and closing, and inspectors who can look for hours without missing a defect. Learning has to build both skills on purpose.

Filling set up skill is thin. One or two setters adjust the machine when fill weight drifts, and others wait for them. Inspectors are trained by a quick demonstration of a good and a bad capsule, then left at a belt for hours. By mid shift, tired eyes miss locked or dented capsules. Humidity rules and gowning habits are explained once and slip over time.
A better plan builds setters in stages. An operator first watches, then adjusts under supervision, then sets a machine for a known product alone. Inspectors train with a sample board of real defects, and their shifts include rest from the belt. Short refreshers on humidity and gowning are scheduled so that night shifts get the same sessions as days.
How to set it up
1. List setter tasks
Write the tasks: fill weight adjustment, closing check, changeover and cleaning. Mark who can do each today.
2. Build the next setters in stages
Pick two operators. Let each watch, then adjust under a setter, then run a known product. Sign off each machine separately.
3. Make a defect board for inspectors
Collect real broken, dented and locked capsules on a board. Use it for training and for a start of shift reminder.
4. Fix the inspection rhythm
Rotate inspectors between belt and other tasks at set intervals. See learning and development for planning the schedule.
5. Run refreshers on every shift
Hold humidity and gowning refreshers on days and nights alike. Track attendance like any other target.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count the setters who can adjust each filling machine alone.
- Ask inspectors how long they sit at the belt without a change.
- List the defects most often missed and caught later.
- Check whether night shift attended the last refresher.

Questions owners ask
Pick careful operators, let them adjust under a setter and sign off machine by machine. A second setter per machine removes your biggest single point of failure.
Set a limit with your inspectors and rotate before the eye tires. Build the interval from what your records show about missed defects, then adjust.
