Role design and job descriptions for Capsule Manufacturers: separate the setter, the inspector and the packer

Capsule lines mix setters, inspectors, packers and checkers in one room. Clear roles show who adjusts, who accepts, who packs and who decides when a batch is stopped.

Why role design and job descriptions matters in capsule manufacturers

When roles blur, an inspector adjusts a machine because the setter is busy, or a packer passes capsules that an inspector would have held back. Changes between batch sizes confuse the line, because nobody owns the changeover. Inspectors are poorly recognised because their role is written as a task, not a responsibility.

Good role sheets name what each person decides. The setter owns fill weight and closing adjustments. The inspector owns the accept or reject decision on a belt and may stop a lot. The line supervisor owns the changeover sequence. The in process checker records and escalates. Each sheet lists who to call when something is outside the person's remit.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Watch a full batch run

Note who does what from room entry to packing. Write down moments where a person did someone else's job.

  2. 2. Write a sheet per role

List what the person decides, what they record and who they call. Use plain words and keep it to one page each.

  3. 3. Give inspectors the authority to stop

State clearly that an inspector can hold a lot and that the supervisor will back the decision. Recognise the role in pay and title.

  4. 4. Name a changeover owner

Choose one person to run each changeover from start to line clearance. Write the sequence on a card at the machine.

  5. 5. Use the sheets when hiring

Share them in role design work and in recruitment, so new people know their remit from day one.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Ask three inspectors if they may stop a lot and what happens if they do.
  • Count changeover mistakes in the last month and their owners.
  • Read two role sheets and see if they name a decision.
  • List jobs done by someone other than the named role.
