Share your requirementsWho usually fills this role
Usually ITI fitters, electricians or diploma mechanicals, or helpers who learned from a senior fitter. Some come from machine builders. At hiring, test reading a simple drawing, diagnosing a described jam, use of measuring tools and willingness to follow lock-out rules.
Skills ladder
Stage 1
New joiner
- Assists with routine lubrication and cleaning
- Uses basic tools correctly
- Follows lock-out before opening machines
Stage 2
Independent
- Diagnoses common mechanical and sensor faults
- Completes breakdown slips and preventive checklists
- Supports changeovers and part adjustments
Stage 3
Senior or lead
- Handles complex faults and root cause
- Plans preventive maintenance and spares
- Trains operators and junior fitters
Training path
First weeks
- 1
Safety and lock-out
The maintenance head demonstrates lock-out, stored energy and guard rules. The joiner locks out a machine correctly and signs.
- 2
Machine familiarisation
A senior fitter introduces each machine's parts, drives and sensors. The joiner marks them on a sketch and the fitter checks.
- 3
Routine checks
Teach lubrication, belts, chains and cleaning schedules. The joiner completes the checklist for a week while the senior reviews it.
First year
- 1
Fault finding
Use real breakdowns to teach logical checks of power, air, sensors and settings. The fitter writes cause and fix on the breakdown slip, which the head reviews.
- 2
Changeover and setting
Teach how to set guides, timing and sealing for each pack size. The fitter is signed off on set-ups with the supervisor.
- 3
Spares and records
Teach spare identification, issue slips and logging. The store keeper reconciles issues with the fitter's slips.
Towards senior
- 1
Root cause and prevention
The senior fitter studies repeat breakdowns and proposes fixes. The head reviews the proposals and adopts them.
- 2
Preventive plan
The fitter helps schedule preventive work around production plans. The head checks how many breakdowns drop.
- 3
Teaching operators
The fitter trains operators on first-line care and safe jam clearing. The supervisor checks operator practice.
Performance review
A monthly 1-to-1 with the maintenance head with breakdown slips, plus a half-yearly written review that includes a practical fault-finding exercise.
What to measure
| Measure | How it is seen |
|---|---|
| Breakdown response and repair quality | Breakdown slips with time to restart and repeat faults |
| Preventive maintenance completion | Checklist completion |
| Lock-out and safety practice | Observation and audits |
| Record accuracy | Breakdown slip and spare issue review |
| Support to operators | Operator feedback |
| Learning of new machines | Skills sheet sign-off |
Evidence to bring
- Breakdown slips
- Preventive checklists
- Spare issue slips
- Skills sheet
- Lock-out audit notes
Questions to ask in the review
- Which machine caused the most stops?
- What was the hardest fault?
- Did any repair fail again?
- Where did you skip a checklist step and why?
- What spares were missing?
- How can operators prevent more faults?
- What machine training do you need?
Pitfalls
- Praising quick repairs that don't find the cause
- No time for preventive work
- Skipping lock-out in an urgent breakdown
- Keeping fitters' knowledge in their heads, not records
