Share your requirementsWho usually fills this role
Typically ITI or diploma holders in plastics or mechanical trades, or operators promoted after years on the machines. At hiring, test mould mounting knowledge, reading of a process sheet, ability to recognise short shots and flash, and attitude to safety near hot barrels and mould clamps.
Skills ladder
Stage 1
New joiner
- Loads material and runs approved settings with guidance
- Removes parts safely and checks for obvious flaws
- Records shot counts and rejects
Stage 2
Independent
- Mounts moulds and sets temperature, pressure and time
- Approves first pieces and adjusts for defects
- Handles colour change and material change
Stage 3
Senior or lead
- Solves repeat defects and cycle time issues
- Trains operators and junior setters
- Works with the mould shop and quality on trials
Training path
First weeks
- 1
Machine and mould safety
The supervisor shows guards, clamp safety, hot parts and lifting for moulds. The joiner demonstrates the safe stop and signs the sheet.
- 2
Process sheet and settings
The senior setter explains each setting and how to log it. The joiner reads a sheet for a running job and points to the parameters.
- 3
Mould mounting assist
The joiner assists mounting under a setter's watch, learning alignment, water lines and ejector checks. The setter checks the joiner's steps.
First year
- 1
Setting from scratch
The senior setter teaches starting a new job, purging, first shots and parameter adjustment. The supervisor signs off after supervised setups on two moulds.
- 2
Defect analysis
Teach short shot, flash, sink marks, burn marks and weld lines with real parts. The setter writes the cause and fix for each and the quality checker reviews.
- 3
Material and colour handling
Teach drying, regrind limits and masterbatch mixing. The setter follows the sheet and the stores staff check consumption.
Towards senior
- 1
Cycle time and cost
The setter and supervisor review cycle time, scrap and energy and agree one improvement. The result is recorded in the process sheet.
- 2
Mould trouble and trials
The setter works with the mould fitter on new or repaired mould trials. The fitter and setter record changes together.
- 3
Coaching operators
The setter trains operators on spotting defects and clearing the machine safely. The supervisor checks operator rejects.
Performance review
A monthly 1-to-1 with the production supervisor using scrap and setup records, plus a half-yearly written review with a practical set-up check.
What to measure
| Measure | How it is seen |
|---|---|
| First-piece approval quality | First-piece records and later rejections |
| Scrap and reject trend | Shift production sheet |
| Setup time | Timed setups and changeovers |
| Process record discipline | Updated process sheets |
| Safety practice | Observation and incident notes |
| Operator guidance | Operator feedback and defect reports |
Evidence to bring
- Process sheets
- Scrap records
- Setup time log
- Defect photos
- Training sign-off
Questions to ask in the review
- Which defects repeat on your machines?
- How do you decide what to change first?
- How long do setups take and why?
- Which moulds give trouble?
- Were any parameters changed and not recorded?
- What near misses did you see?
- What help do you need from the mould shop?
Pitfalls
- Letting setters change settings without recording them
- Rewarding output and ignoring scrap
- Training operators with no safety sign-off
- No handover between shifts on settings
Questions about this role
Only within the limits written in the process sheet. Setters make wider changes.
Update the process sheet whenever a good setting is found and review changes at handover.
Yes, keep sign-off sheets and confirm statutory needs with your adviser.
