Sales Associate job description
A Sales Associate greets shoppers, helps them choose, bills the sale and keeps their section of the store tidy and stocked. The role turns store visits into sales and repeat customers for a retail business.

Why the role exists
In Indian retail, whether a kirana-style supermarket, a mall fashion store or a hardware counter, the Sales Associate is the face of the business to the shopper. The role handles selling, billing and shelf upkeep and reports to a store manager or floor supervisor. Good associates raise sales and reduce returns.
What the person does
- Greet customers, ask what they need and guide them to the right product, size or counter.
- Explain product features, prices, offers and exchange terms accurately without overpromising.
- Bill sales on the point of sale system, accept cash, card and UPI payments and give correct change.
- Refill shelves and racks, fold and tidy stock, and keep price tags and labels correct.
- Check stock in the backroom when a size or colour is not on the floor, and offer alternatives.
- Handle returns and exchanges using store steps and escalate exceptions to the supervisor.
- Take part in the opening and closing checks, stock counts and cash handover with the supervisor.
- Collect customer contact details with consent for the loyalty programme and note requests for products not in stock.
Skills and tools
- Friendly, clear communication in the local language and basic English or Hindi
- Product knowledge of the store's categories and brands
- Point of sale billing, barcode scanning and UPI payment handling
- Basic arithmetic for bills, discounts and change
- Folding, arranging and tagging stock neatly
- Handling busy periods and queues without losing courtesy
- Honesty with cash and stock
- Willingness to stand for long shifts and work weekends
Education and experience
Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.
- Class 12 pass or equivalent preferred, with graduates welcome, or equivalent experience in a shop.
- Preferred previous experience at a store, counter or showroom, though freshers with a strong attitude can be trained.
- Preferred comfort with a billing machine or app, or willingness to learn it in the first week.
- Preferred ability to speak the main language of the city and read basic English product labels.
How the work is judged
- Individual sales, measured over a period and against the team plan.
- Average bill value and number of items per customer, through suggestions made to shoppers.
- Accuracy in billing, stock handling and cash at the counter.
- Customer feedback and the number of complaints linked to the associate.
- Attendance, punctuality and upkeep of the assigned section.
Where the role can lead
- Senior Sales Associate or Team Leader on the floor of the same store.
- Department Manager or Store Supervisor, with training in stock and rosters.
- Assistant Store Manager and, later, Store Manager in a retail chain.
Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- A customer has tried five shirts and cannot decide. How do you help without pushing too hard?
- The billing system is slow and the queue is long. What do you do for the people waiting?
- A customer asks for an exchange after the allowed period. How do you handle it?
- Tell us about a time you worked a long shift in a busy shop. How did you keep your energy and manners?
- You find a price tag that does not match the system. What do you do before a customer reaches it?
- How would you recommend a product you have not used yourself?
Hiring tips for this role
- Test behaviour, not only talk. Ask the candidate to role-play a customer who is unsure, and watch for listening, patience and honest answers about the product.
- Check the billing and cash experience. A candidate who handled cash at a busy counter will settle in faster than one who only displayed goods.
- Be clear on shift hours, weekly off and festival working. Many early exits come from surprise at weekend and sale-season hours.
- Do not screen out freshers too quickly. Attitude and reliability matter more than years, and a short on-floor trial day shows both.
Questions about hiring a sales associate
The work is similar. A counter salesman often serves from behind a counter where stock is kept, as in hardware or jewellery. A Sales Associate works the open floor. Set out your own setting in the description.
Not always. What matters is clear communication with your customers, usually in the local language, and ability to read product labels. Mall and brand stores often prefer basic English or Hindi as well.
Often yes. A fresher with good manners, a clean billing test and willingness to stand on shift can do well with a few weeks of training and a buddy from the existing team.
