Recruitment process consulting for Self-Drive Rental Companies: counter, delivery and yard roles
A rental company hires three different kinds of people: those who face customers, those who drive for them and those who prepare cars. Each needs a different test, and a single generic advert fits none.

Branch managers often hire whoever is available when a position opens, because a vacant counter on a Saturday costs bookings. Quick hires then cause slower damage, with executives who rush or drivers who leave after a month for a bigger firm.
A short routine for each role gives better results: what the person will do on a normal day, what trial task shows it, who decides and how soon. Sourcing through local colleges, driver networks and staff referrals can then be matched to each role rather than lumped together.
How to set it up
1. Write a role card for each of the three groups
One page each for counter, delivery and yard roles, with tasks, hours, peak expectations and what good looks like in the first month. See role design and job descriptions.
2. Choose a trial task
Ask counter candidates to explain a rental agreement to a mock customer, drivers to complete a mock handover and yard candidates to prepare a car to your standard.
3. Use the right sources
Hospitality and retail backgrounds for counter roles, existing driver contacts for delivery and local referral for yard roles. Track which source yields people who stay.
4. Decide with two voices
The branch manager and a second person, such as the fleet coordinator, meet each shortlisted candidate. Record the reasons for the choice.
5. Keep a bench
Maintain a small list of trained backups for each branch so a sudden exit does not leave the counter empty at a peak.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many hires in the last year stayed past three months, by role.
- Ask each branch manager how long a counter vacancy stays open.
- Look at whether a trial task has ever changed a hiring decision.
- Find out which source produced your best delivery driver.

Questions owners ask
It helps but is not essential. Customer handling skill and attention to detail matter more, and the handover routine can be taught. Prefer people who stay calm when a customer is upset.
Often from referrals by existing drivers, from taxi and logistics work and from earlier delivery roles. Test them on customer manner as well as driving.
Depends on the role and city, so avoid fixed promises. A ready bench and a routine trial shorten it, because you are not starting from nothing each time.
