Attendance, shift and leave for Yarn Manufacturers: three shifts, hostels and festival restarts
Frames run all day and night, and many workers live in hostels. A clear roster and leave plan keeps every section covered and stops idle spindles.

Spindles stand idle when a frame tender is missing, and there is rarely a spare. The night shift comes in short after pay day or a festival. Hostel life blurs working hours and rest, so the supervisor finds it hard to say whether an absent worker is sick, travelling or just tired. Records are kept by sections and nobody sees the whole picture.
A usable process starts with a shift roster by department that names each tender and the relief for him. Attendance is recorded at the gate and in the section, and compared daily. Hostel wardens share information on sickness and travel. Leave is planned for known festivals and harvest by asking early and staggering departures, with a restart routine that brings staff back in stages and starts frames at light load.
How to set it up
1. Build the roster by department
Blow room, carding, frames, winding and packing each have named staff and named relief. A change goes onto the board before the shift starts.
2. Compare gate and section attendance
Check the gate record with the section sheet each day. Differences point to buddy punching or confusion over who is on which frame.
3. Work with the hostel warden
Agree how sickness and travel are reported. A worker who is ill gets seen the same day, so a week of quiet absence is avoided.
4. Stagger festival and harvest leave
Ask for plans a month ahead, spread departures into waves and agree return dates. Plan slower running and tell buyers if needed.
5. Restart in stages
Bring the blow room and cards first, then frames, with new and returning staff paired. Check yarn faults daily for the first week. See attendance, shift and leave software if sheets get heavy.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count idle spindles last week caused by missing tenders.
- Compare gate attendance and section sheets for one day.
- Ask the hostel warden how many workers were sick last month.
- Check how many days the mill took to reach normal running after the last long leave.

Questions owners ask
Pay on a day that does not clash with a long break where possible, keep a small reserve and give the night shift a fair allowance. Notice patterns before blaming individuals.
Yes. A clear shift pattern with rest, meal and travel rules helps both sides. Hostel rules should be written and explained at joining.
Cross-train a few tenders across adjacent sections and keep a list of who can cover where. Practise cover occasionally so the skill stays fresh.
