Attendance, shift and leave process for Plastic Extrusion Units: breaks and cover on a line that cannot stop
An extruder line that runs round the clock cannot pause for a tea break or a missing winder. A clear shift and leave plan decides who stands at the line at every hour.

On a continuous line, the winder cannot leave for a meal because the product keeps coming. Without a break rota, some operators skip meals and others disappear for too long. A missing person pulls a worker from another line, and that line then runs short. Leave requests pile up at festival time. When the roster changes by word of mouth, nobody knows who is on the line, and an accident at night becomes hard to trace.
Good practice is a break rota that shows who covers the winder, who watches the extruder and when each person eats. A named relief person is trained for each critical position. Shifts are rostered a month ahead with swaps recorded. Handover at shift change covers line status, product running, scrap and open issues. Leave is planned around orders, and the team sees the plan.
How to set it up
1. Map each line's positions and what cannot be left alone
Extruder watch, winder, cutter, packer. Mark which roles can be left for ten minutes and which cannot. This decides how many relief people you need.
2. Write a break rota with a named cover
For each break, say who goes and who covers. Rotate so no one always takes the last slot. Post it at the line and review it with operators.
3. Train a relief person for each critical role
One person per line who can take over the winder or extruder watch. Record the sign off date. See learning and development.
4. Build the monthly roster and record swaps
Publish early, allow swaps within a rule and record each one. Check that the attendance record matches the people actually on the line. See attendance, shift and leave process.
5. Use a written handover at every shift change
Line status, product, scrap so far, faults and people issues. Keep it to half a page and have both leaders sign it.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask winders when they last had a full meal break on a night shift.
- Count lines that have no trained relief for the winder position.
- Compare the roster for last week with who actually worked each shift.
- Read the handover notes for last week's changeovers, or note that none exist.

Questions owners ask
Stopping costs material and time because the line needs a stable start afterward. Most units use a rota with cover instead. Where a stop is possible between runs, plan a break there, but do not rely on it.
Keep a short call list and a relief person per line. If no relief exists, decide in advance who moves from which line. Record the cause of each absence so repeat patterns can be discussed fairly with the person.
Rotation reduces fatigue and builds skill, as long as each person is trained for each role. Plan it as part of the roster and keep the product quality checks with people who have been signed off.
