Attendance, shift and leave process for Rigid Packaging Manufacturers: rosters and handover on hot lines
Moulding lines run all day, and a gap on a shift can leave a press idle or in the hands of a helper. A clear roster, handover and leave rule keeps the hot machines properly manned.

When rosters change by phone call, nobody knows who covers the setter's day off. A packer from the day shift ends up at the press on the night shift, and a mould change waits for the one person who can do it. Leave is granted by whoever is nearest, so a long weekend leaves one line with half a crew. Handover is a nod at the gate, so the incoming crew finds out about the faulty cooling at the first reject.
Good looks like a posted roster with a named cover for the setter and for each press group. Leave is requested ahead and approved by one person who sees the whole floor. A shift handover has five lines written on a sheet: machine state, moulds changed, problems, material shortage and anything unsafe. The sheet is signed by both supervisors.
How to set it up
1. Fix the shift pattern in writing
Write the shifts, rotation days and weekly offs for each section. Include who covers the setter, the tool room and the inspector. Post it where every crew can see it.
2. Name the cover for key roles
For each setter and inspector, name a second person who can step in. Check that the second person has done the task at least once on a live job.
3. Set one leave route
One person approves leave after seeing the roster for all lines. Give a notice period and a simple rule for festival weeks. Record every leave and every absence in the same register.
4. Add a five line handover sheet
The outgoing supervisor writes machine state, mould changes, issues, material and safety points. The incoming supervisor reads and signs. Keep the sheets for the month in a file.
5. Read absence weekly
Look at who is absent and on which shift. Talk to repeat cases early and kindly. See attendance and shift software when the paper register no longer keeps up.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count how many shifts last month ran without the named setter or cover.
- Read the handover sheets for the last week and note any with blank lines.
- List staff who took leave on the same days in the last festival fortnight.
- Check how many night shifts had a supervisor present for the whole shift.

Questions owners ask
Ask for notice, and give a clear yes or no within a day. People take unplanned leave when they cannot get a decision. A shared calendar of approved leave for each line also helps.
Fixed rotation helps people plan their lives, and a published roster gives a few weeks of notice. Whatever the rotation, avoid quick turnarounds from night back to a morning shift.
Your plan should name the second person. If there is none, plan the product mix around the gap, and start training a second setter. One setter on a single line is a risk you can see in the roster.
