Attendance, shift and leave process for Packaging Film Manufacturers: night crews, handover and restarts
Film lines run through the night with small crews. Clear shift patterns, handover and cover decide whether a restart is clean or wasteful, and whether night staff feel supported.

Night crews run alone, with the supervisor away and a technician on call. A grade change at three in the morning is made by whoever is at the line, with only a verbal note from the day crew. Leave is granted by asking whoever is around, so a long weekend can leave a line with a new operator. Overtime is called by phone, and the same few answer. Absence is hard to read, because the muster and the line log disagree.
Good looks like a posted shift pattern, a named technician on call each night, a one page handover with line state, grade, gauge readings and open faults, and a rule on who may restart a stopped line. Leave follows one route. Overtime rotates. Absence is read weekly by line and shift, using one record.
How to set it up
1. Write the shift pattern and cover
State shifts, rotation, weekly offs and the named technician on call each night. Post it at the line and share the on call numbers.
2. Add a handover sheet at each line
Line state, grade and width, gauge readings, open faults and who was called. Both crews sign. Keep a month of sheets in a file.
3. Set a restart rule
Write who may restart after a stop, who must be called, and what to record. Night crews then know what is theirs and what is not.
4. Use one leave route and rotate overtime
One person approves leave after seeing every line. Overtime is offered by rotation. See attendance, shift and leave software if the register gets heavy.
5. Read absence weekly by line and shift
Use one record, not two. Speak early to repeat cases and look for causes such as transport or fatigue after night shifts.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Read a week of handover sheets and count missing gauge readings.
- List nights last month when the on call technician was not reachable.
- Count overtime hours by person on the main lines.
- Compare muster and line log for absence on one night.

Questions owners ask
A named person to call, a handover that carries line state, a restart rule and a supervisor visit at a set time. Crews that feel supported make better decisions and stay longer.
Avoid grade changes at handover when crews are least settled. Plan changes for when both crews overlap, and make sure the incoming crew has read the note before taking over.
Either works if the pattern is written and published weeks ahead. Avoid short turnarounds from night to morning, which drive fatigue and absence.
