HR reporting and analytics for Packaging Film Manufacturers: restart waste, churn and overtime by crew
A film plant already holds gauge records, waste notes, muster and exits. One monthly page that joins them shows where restarts waste material, which shift loses people and who carries overtime.

Quality complaints in film arrive late, after the reel has gone to a converter. By then nobody can say which shift or crew ran it. Waste on restarts is counted in kilos in one register and people are counted in another. The owner feels churn on night crews but cannot show it. Overtime is paid without a view of which lines carry it. Decisions on hiring and pay are made on feel.
Good looks like one page a month showing headcount by line and shift, joiners and leavers, absence, overtime, restart waste and complaints by shift. It is prepared by hand from existing sheets. The owner and plant head read it together. One or two actions follow each month, and the previous month's actions are reviewed first.
How to set it up
1. List five questions for the page
Where do we lose people, which shift has the most waste on restarts, which line carries overtime, which complaints trace to which crew, which role is slow to hire.
2. Pull the facts from what you hold
Use muster, exit slips, gauge and waste registers, overtime sheet and complaint log. Add line and shift to each entry.
3. Put it on one page
Tables for headcount, joiners, leavers, absence, overtime, waste and complaints by line and shift. Add a short comment from the plant head.
4. Read it every month together
Thirty minutes with the plant head and shift leaders. Pick one action. See HR reports automation when the manual page becomes slow.
5. Keep a rolling year
File each page. After a year the pattern by season, shift and role becomes clear, and you can show customers and auditors how you manage people.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count leavers by line and shift for the last six months.
- Compare restart waste across the three crews for the last month.
- Add overtime hours by line for the last quarter.
- Check how many complaints in the last year could be traced to a shift.

Questions owners ask
Compare restart waste by crew and by time of day. If one crew or one hour stands out, look at handover, training and staffing there before looking at people.
Not at first. A sheet is enough for a few months. Move to software when preparing the page takes too long or errors creep in.
Use one as the master, usually the muster for attendance and the line log for output. Note the differences, and fix the cause, such as late entries or missing signatures.
