Attendance, shift and leave process for Custom Jewellery Workshops: Protecting Order Dates in the Wedding Weeks
A custom workshop cannot swap a karigar like a counter clerk. When one skilled person is away, a wedding order slips, so leave and attendance are planned against the order book.

Workshop hours are often loose. Karigars arrive when work is ready, take a day for a family function with a phone call, and work late before a deadline. This suits a small team until two people are absent together, or one is away during a week when a stone-setting order is due.
The aim is not to make a factory timetable. It is to see leave and attendance alongside the order book, so that the owner can say yes to leave with confidence and warn people when a heavy week is coming. A short record of who was present each day also supports piece rate calculations and fair overtime.
How to set it up
1. Record daily presence on one sheet
Name, time in, time out and the order worked on. A notebook is enough if filled daily, and a photo of the page at closing time is a useful backup.
2. Mark heavy weeks on a calendar
Block the weeks before wedding dates, Akshaya Tritiya and Diwali. Share it with all karigars a month ahead so leave requests are made around it.
3. Set a notice rule for leave
Ask for leave with notice that depends on the length, and agree what happens in the heavy weeks. Keep exceptions for genuine emergencies and record why.
4. Cover the critical skills
For every skill held by one person, name who steps in during leave. Link to the succession planning work.
5. Review monthly
Look at absences, late days and overtime against missed dates, and talk to the people involved before changing rules.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count absences last month by day and see how many fell in weeks with deadlines.
- Check whether any order was late because a named karigar was away.
- Ask karigars whether they know the notice rule for leave.
- Compare hours recorded with piece pay for two people.

Questions owners ask
A total ban causes resentment. Better to ask for early requests, spread leave and allow genuine emergencies. Offer time off after the season to those who worked through it.
Talk privately, record the dates and ask what is causing it. Many late days follow a pattern, such as a long commute or a family duty, that can be fixed with a changed start time.
Not for a small team. A daily sheet signed or noted by a supervisor is enough. Choose a method everyone will use rather than one that looks modern.
