Compensation benchmarking for Saree shops: pay for salesmen, folders and the head of the counter

Saree salesmen compare pay with the next showroom across town. Benchmarking against nearby shops shows where your counter, folding and billing pay sits, and where it is likely to lose people.

Why compensation benchmarking matters in saree shops

A saree shop pays its senior salesmen well, because their knowledge is the business. Juniors and folding staff are paid much less, and the gap is large. When a bigger showroom offers a junior a clearer grade, the junior leaves, taking the weaves learnt at your counter. The owner finds out only after the resignation.

Benchmarking is a simple comparison. List your roles, ask peers and local sources what similar shops pay for each, and place your own bands beside them. It also looks at the mix of fixed pay, incentive and extras like meals or festival gifts. The aim is not to match every rate but to know where you are and decide on purpose.

How to set it up

  1. 1. List roles and current pay

Write each role, grade and total monthly pay including incentive. Mark the range inside each role.

  2. 2. Collect local comparisons

Speak with peers, staff and recruiters about what nearby showrooms offer for the same roles. Note the pay mix as well as the amount.

  3. 3. Place your pay beside the market

Mark roles that lie below, near and above. Look closely at juniors and folding staff, where leaving is most likely.

  4. 4. Choose where to move first

Pick two or three roles where the gap hurts retention most, and plan changes within what the shop can bear.

  5. 5. Explain pay to staff and review yearly

Share the grade ladder and how a person moves up. Review each year, along with compensation and rewards.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • List the roles that left in the last two years and what they went to.
  • Compare your junior pay with two nearby showrooms.
  • Check how incentive is split among seniors and juniors.
  • Ask staff if they know how a grade moves up.

Questions owners ask

No. Know the gap and decide where you can compete, such as grade clarity, learning, respect, steady work and a fair festival season, then be honest with staff about it.
