Attendance, shift and leave for Electronic Product Manufacturers: keeping stations covered through peaks
A product line moves at one pace, so absence on one station slows everyone. Attendance and shift rules must keep stations covered and treat people fairly through peaks.

Without clear rules, absence is handled by whoever is angry that day. A weak station slows the line, and supervisors borrow people from other stations without notice. Festivals and sale seasons bring heavy overtime, then high absence after payday. Leave is approved by memory, and some people are always asked to stay late.
Good practice is simple and visible. Rosters are published in advance, a standby list covers each key station and overtime is offered by rotation and recorded. Leave rules are explained at joining and applied the same way to all. Attendance is read by station and day to find patterns such as post-payday absence, and the supervisor talks to people before using warnings.
How to set it up
1. Name the key stations
Mark stations where one absence slows the whole line. List two or three people able to cover each one.
2. Publish the roster ahead
Share shift patterns weekly or monthly with enough notice. Keep one version so that supervisors, payroll and operators work from the same plan.
3. Offer overtime by rotation
Keep a record of who has done what and offer extra hours in turn. Pay it on time. This lowers resentment and tiredness.
4. Plan for festivals and peaks
Collect leave wishes early, set a fair rule and tell people the outcome in good time. See our attendance, shift and leave service.
5. Read absence by pattern
Check absences by station, day and supervisor each month. Talk to people before moving to warnings, and fix causes such as transport or shift timing.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count the days last month when a key station ran short.
- List who did the most and fewest overtime hours in the last quarter.
- Check absence on the days after payday and after festivals.
- Ask three operators how they ask for leave and how they hear the answer.

Questions owners ask
First check whether the cause is skill, method or absence. Train or support the person, change the method if needed, and keep a trained backup. Do not blame the person before you have looked at the station.
Yes, because one absent person stops the line. Keep it short, trained and rotated so that standby is not seen as punishment. Pay or recognise the extra flexibility.
Talk to the person to find the cause, such as transport or family needs, and agree a plan. Apply the rule equally to all. Use formal steps only after support has been tried.
