Onboarding and probation for Electronic Product Manufacturers: a first week that keeps new operators

Line operators in a product factory are young, new and often have other offers. The first days and the probation period decide whether they stay past the first month.

Why onboarding and probation matters in electronic product manufacturers

Without a plan, a new operator is handed to a station on day one and left to watch. Nobody explains the pay date, the shift pattern or where to ask for help. The operator is slow, gets scolded and leaves within weeks for a unit next door. Seasonal hires arrive in a group and the supervisors cannot give them time. Probation ends on paper with no talk.

A good first week is simple and the same for each person. Day one covers the tour, safety, pay and who to ask. The first days are spent on one easy station with a buddy, and speed is not judged yet. Supervisors check in at the end of the first day, the first week and the end of probation. Problems are heard early and recorded.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Prepare before they arrive

Have the locker, uniform, station and buddy ready. Give joiners a one page note on shifts, pay dates, breaks and who to call if they are unwell.

  2. 2. Run a plain first day

Tour the line, show the safety points, explain how the product is made and where their station fits. Introduce the supervisor and the buddy by name.

  3. 3. Teach one station at a time

Start with the simplest station and move up as they get confident. Use a short checklist for each station and let the buddy sign it.

  4. 4. Hold check-ins

Supervisors speak to each joiner at the end of day one, week one and week four. Ask what is hard and what they do not understand. Write one action.

  5. 5. Close probation with a conversation

Review progress with the person, confirm or extend with reasons and record it. Our onboarding and probation work covers the forms and steps.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Count how many people from the last intake left within the first month.
  • Ask a recent joiner what they wished they had been told on day one.
  • Check that each joiner has a named buddy and a station checklist.
  • Look at probation records and see how many have a written conversation.

Questions owners ask

Fix the first week: clear information, a friendly buddy and an easy first station. Ask leavers why they left and look for repeated reasons such as pay timing or supervisor behaviour.
