Common mistakes

  • Setting notice in the policy that differs from the appointment letter, creating disputes.
  • Leaving buy-out undecided so each case is negotiated afresh.
  • Allowing leave during notice with no rule on whether it extends the notice.
  • Withdrawing system access on the day of resignation, before handover is done.
  • Making recoveries from the final settlement without checking the contract and the rules.

Adapt it to your business

  • Factory or plant: tie notice to shift cover and tool or machine handover.
  • Shop or retail: add stock and till handover, and festival-season restrictions on leave.
  • Clinic or hospital: add patient handover and on-call cover for clinical roles.
  • Office or services firm: add client transition and data return.

Questions about this template

There is no single answer. It depends on the role, your contract and the rules that apply to you. Many SMEs use shorter notice for junior roles and longer for managers. Confirm with a qualified adviser.
