Substation Operator job description

A Substation Operator runs and watches a power substation, carries out switching on instruction and keeps records of loads and faults. The role keeps supply safe and steady for the network.

An HR consultant and business owner reviewing employee records together

Why the role exists

Substations in India work round the clock under utility or plant control. The operator works in shifts, reports to the substation in-charge and takes instructions from the load dispatch or control centre. The role needs calm, accurate switching and careful logs, because errors can cause outages or injuries.

What the person does

  • Take over the shift with a written handover and check the status of all feeders, transformers and breakers.
  • Carry out switching operations only on instruction from the control centre or in-charge, and repeat each instruction back before acting.
  • Record voltage, current, load and temperature readings at set times and note any value outside the normal range.
  • Respond to tripping, alarms and abnormal sounds, report them at once to the control centre and note the sequence of events.
  • Follow permit to work and earthing steps when maintenance teams need to work on isolated equipment.
  • Check battery bank, DC supply, oil levels, fire fighting equipment and earthing during rounds, and report defects.
  • Keep the switchyard and control room clean and secure, and allow only authorised persons inside as per the entry rules.
  • Maintain the operation log, shutdown records and equipment history so the next shift and the in-charge see the full picture.

Skills and tools

  • Switching procedures and single line diagram reading
  • Understanding of protection relays and alarms
  • Permit to work and earthing practice
  • Reading meters, SCADA and control panel indications
  • Battery bank and DC supply checks
  • Fire safety and emergency response
  • Clear radio and phone communication
  • Careful log keeping and shift handover

Education and experience

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

  • ITI in electrical trade, or diploma in electrical engineering preferred, or equivalent substation experience.
  • Experience in a utility, industrial or renewable energy substation preferred.
  • Any licence or authorisation to operate electrical equipment depends on the employer and state; confirm with the employer's own adviser.
  • Ability to work rotating and night shifts and remain alert on long duties.

How the work is judged

  • Accuracy of switching and records, judged by the in-charge and the control centre.
  • Speed and clarity in reporting trips and abnormal conditions.
  • Safe work record, including permit and earthing steps followed.
  • Quality of shift handover and equipment rounds.
  • Readiness of the substation in routine inspections by the utility or owner.

Where the role can lead

  • Senior Substation Operator or Shift In-charge.
  • Substation In-charge or Assistant Engineer.
  • Control room operator or Load Dispatch Centre roles.

Interview questions to ask

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.

  1. What do you do when the control centre gives a switching instruction that seems to conflict with the permit already issued?
  2. Describe how you respond when a feeder trips and the control room phone is busy.
  3. Explain the steps before a maintenance team can work on an isolated bay.
  4. What do you check in a handover so you do not inherit someone else's mistake?
  5. Tell us about an abnormal reading you noticed during rounds and what you did about it.
  6. How do you stay alert during a long night shift when little is happening?

Hiring tips for this role

  • Test knowledge with a single line diagram and a switching sequence. Ask what the candidate would check at each step.
  • Ask scenario questions on trips and hand over. Calm and clear speech matters as much as technical knowledge.
  • A common mistake is hiring on certificate alone. Confirm how recent and how real the candidate's switching experience is.
  • Check willingness for rotating shifts and the plant's location. High turnover often starts with unclear shift pattern.

Questions about hiring a substation operator

An ITI or diploma in electrical trade is common, but needs depend on the employer and state. Any authorisation to operate is a matter to confirm with your own adviser, not to assume from a certificate.
