Solar Installation Technician job description

A Solar Installation Technician mounts panels, wires strings and installs inverters on rooftop and ground mounted solar systems. Careful installation decides how long the system lasts and how safely it runs.

An HR consultant and business owner reviewing employee records together

Why the role exists

Solar installers in India work on commercial rooftops, factory sheds, farms and ground mounted parks. The technician carries out the physical installation under a site lead. The role works with electricians, civil crews, the design team and the customer, and is exposed to heat, heights and monsoon.

What the person does

  • Unload, check and stack modules, structures and cables on site, and report damage or shortage to the site lead the same day.
  • Assemble mounting structures and fix modules to the layout drawing, checking alignment, tilt and spacing.
  • Lay and terminate DC cables, connectors and string wiring, using the right tools and labelling each run.
  • Install inverters, combiner boxes, earthing and surge protection as per the approved drawing and the supervisor's instruction.
  • Work at height with harness and fall protection, and check ladders, edges and roof strength before moving about.
  • Perform basic checks on polarity, continuity and string voltage before the commissioning team takes over.
  • Keep tools and consumables in order and record installed quantities and open items on the daily sheet.
  • Clean up the site, explain basic operation to the customer's staff when asked, and report customer concerns to the lead.

Skills and tools

  • Module, structure and cable installation
  • DC wiring, MC4 connectors and crimping
  • Multimeter and clamp meter use
  • Earthing and surge protection basics
  • Working at height with harness
  • Reading simple layout and string diagrams
  • Daily record keeping on a phone or paper sheet
  • Teamwork and clear safety communication

Education and experience

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

  • ITI in electrical or fitter trade, or diploma in electrical engineering preferred, or equivalent field experience.
  • Experience on rooftop or ground mounted solar installation preferred.
  • Any electrical licence or safety training needed depends on the employer and state; confirm with the employer's own adviser.
  • Fitness for outdoor work in heat and at height, with proper protective equipment provided by the employer.

How the work is judged

  • Installation quality, measured by fewer defects found at inspection and commissioning.
  • Adherence to the daily installation plan and the project schedule.
  • Safe work record, including harness use and reported near misses.
  • Accuracy of material and daily progress records.
  • Customer feedback on conduct, tidiness and clarity on site.

Where the role can lead

  • Senior Installation Technician or Crew Lead.
  • Solar Site Supervisor or Commissioning Technician.
  • Solar Project Engineer after added study or experience.

Interview questions to ask

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.

  1. Describe how you check a string before connecting it to the inverter. What would make you stop?
  2. What steps do you take before working on a metal roof in the monsoon?
  3. A module arrives cracked but the crew wants to install it. What do you do?
  4. How do you decide cable routing so wiring stays neat and protected from sun and rodents?
  5. Tell us about a time a drawing did not match the roof. How did you raise it?
  6. How do you keep your tools and PPE ready when you move between several sites in a week?

Hiring tips for this role

  • Test hands on: ask the candidate to terminate a connector and tie off a cable run, and watch for neat work and safe habits.
  • Ask about working at height. A candidate who plays down the risk may be careless on a roof.
  • A common mistake is hiring electricians with only household wiring experience. DC solar work has different hazards.
  • Provide PPE and clear job instructions from day one. Hiring only on low expected pay often leads to turnover and poor work.

Questions about hiring a solar installation technician

An ITI or diploma helps, but skill on site matters more. Any licence or training needed depends on the employer and state, so confirm with your own adviser rather than assuming a certificate is enough.
