Site Foreman job description

A Site Foreman runs the working crews on a construction site day to day. They allot tasks to masons, carpenters and helpers, keep work moving and make sure it is done to the engineer's instructions.

Why the role exists

The foreman is the person closest to the work. On an Indian building site, they take instructions from the site engineer, manage gang leaders and labour contractors, and keep the site safe, tidy and productive from the first shift to the last.

What the person does

  • Collect the day's instructions from the site engineer and brief each gang leader on what to build and where.
  • Take attendance of the labour on site each morning and match headcount to the work planned for that day.
  • Check that scaffolding, props and shuttering are secure before crews start work at height.
  • Make sure tools, mixers, vibrators and hoists are in working order, and report breakdowns to the engineer quickly.
  • Control the use of cement, bricks and steel on the floor so that wastage and theft are limited.
  • Inspect finished work such as brickwork, plaster and shuttering, and order rework before the engineer's inspection.
  • Enforce helmets, harnesses and safe movement on the site, and stop unsafe work at once.
  • Settle small disputes among crews and labour contractors and report larger issues to the engineer or project manager.

Skills and tools

  • Reading simple drawings and marked-out layouts
  • Leading mason, carpenter and bar bending crews
  • Allocating labour to tasks and tracking daily output
  • Knowledge of masonry, plaster, shuttering and concrete practice
  • Safe working at height and scaffold checks
  • Basic arithmetic for measuring and counting material
  • Clear spoken instructions in the local language and Hindi
  • Keeping daily labour and material notes in a register or on a phone

Education and experience

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

  • Preferred: ITI or diploma in civil trades, or equivalent practical experience as a senior mason or supervisor.
  • Preferred: several years on building sites, including time leading a gang.
  • Preferred: working understanding of site safety practice, with training arranged by the employer.
  • Preferred: no fixed education level if skill is proven, since many good foremen rise from the trades.

How the work is judged

  • Daily output of the crews against the work allotted.
  • Quality of work at the engineer's inspection and the amount of rework needed.
  • Wastage of materials on the floor compared with the norm set by the engineer.
  • Safety incidents and near misses reported on the shift.
  • Crew attendance and steadiness of labour on site.

Where the role can lead

  • Senior Foreman or General Foreman across several blocks.
  • Site Supervisor or Assistant Site Engineer with added study.
  • Construction Manager for a small contractor.

Interview questions to ask

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.

  1. How do you plan the day when half your masons do not turn up?
  2. Tell us how you check scaffolding before sending men to work at height.
  3. A gang leader refuses to redo poor brickwork. What do you do?
  4. How do you spot material being wasted or taken from the site?
  5. Describe how you work with a site engineer who gives instructions you think are wrong.
  6. Tell us about an accident or near miss you handled and what changed after it.

Hiring tips for this role

  • Watch the candidate brief a crew, if possible on an existing site. The ability to give clear instructions matters more than a polished interview.
  • Check how many crews and what trades the person has led. A mason promoted last year is not yet a foreman.
  • Ask for the names of past engineers who can speak to the work, and call them yourself.
  • Be open about site location, working hours and stay arrangements. Foreman roles often fail on logistics rather than skill.

Questions about hiring a site foreman

The foreman manages the crews that do the building work. They allot tasks, check quality, control materials and keep the site safe, following the plan set by the site engineer.
