- Check that cleaning chemicals, mops, trolleys and machines are used correctly and stored safely.
- Operate or supervise scrubbing machines, vacuum cleaners and other equipment, and report faults early.
- Take attendance, manage breaks and arrange cover when an attendant is absent.
- Raise requests for consumables such as tissue, handwash and garbage bags, and track stock in the housekeeping store.

Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- How do you check a washroom has been cleaned properly without redoing the work yourself?
- An attendant does not come in and the client has an event today. What do you do?
- Tell us how you train a new attendant who has never used a scrubbing machine.
- How do you handle a client who complains about the same area daily?
- What steps do you follow to store and use cleaning chemicals safely?
- Describe how you keep a tired team motivated in a busy week.
Hiring tips for this role
- Visit a live site with the candidate if you can. Ask them to inspect an area and list what they would fix. This shows eye for detail.
- Check whether the candidate has led people or only worked as an attendant. The two roles need different skills.
- Explain chemicals, machines and hygiene training plainly in the job description, so that the candidate knows what the employer provides.
- Offer a clear shift pattern and weekly off. Housekeeping leaders leave fast when rosters change without notice.
