The Food Processing Machine Operator runs and monitors machines on a food line, such as an extruder, mixer or pouch filling and sealing machine. They keep output steady, packs correct and the line clean.

Why the role exists
This role works on the production floor of a snack, spice, ready-to-eat or packaged food unit. The operator reports to the line supervisor, follows batch cards and works closely with quality, maintenance and packing staff through two or three shifts.
What the person does
- Set up the machine for the product by loading material, fixing dies or film rolls and entering the settings on the batch card.
- Start the line, watch temperature, speed, weight and seal quality, and adjust within the limits set by the supervisor.
- Check pack weight, seal strength and print codes at set intervals and record the results.
- Stop the machine and report to the supervisor when a fault, jam or leak appears.
- Clean the machine at product changeovers and at the end of the shift using the approved method and record it.
- Clear minor jams safely, using lock-out steps, and call maintenance for anything beyond the operator's task.
- Keep a count of output, rejects and downtime in the shift log or on the display panel.
- Follow hygiene rules such as hair covers, hand washing and no jewellery, and flag any foreign matter found in the product.
Skills and tools
- Operating extruders, mixers, fryers or form-fill-seal pouch machines
- Reading batch cards and machine setting sheets
- Checking weight, seal and print code against standard
- Safe use of guards, interlocks and lock-out steps
- Cleaning in place and manual cleaning of food contact parts
- Basic fault finding on jams, film tracking and sensor trips

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.
- ITI, diploma or higher secondary preferred, or equivalent experience on food or packing machines.
- Experience on extruders, pouch packing or similar food lines is preferred.
- Machine safety and food hygiene training as the employer requires; confirm what applies with your own adviser.
- Readiness for rotating shifts and standing work in a controlled-temperature area.
How the work is judged
- Output of acceptable packs against the shift plan
- Reject and rework levels seen in pack checks
- Machine downtime and speed of restart after a stoppage
- Accuracy of shift logs and cleaning records
- Compliance with hygiene, allergen changeover and safety steps
Where the role can lead
- Senior operator or line leader for a packing or extrusion line.
- Production supervisor responsible for a shift.
- Maintenance or mechanical technician trained on food machinery.
Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- Describe how you set up a pouch machine for a new product size. What do you check first?
- The seal is weak on every tenth pack. What do you do?
- How do you clean a machine between a nut product and a nut-free product?
- A jam appears while the line is running. Walk us through what you do.
- How do you keep a record of weights and rejects without slowing the line?
- Tell us about a time you spotted a safety or hygiene problem and reported it.
Hiring tips for this role
- Run a practical test on a machine similar to yours. Watch set-up, checks and safe working more than raw speed.
- A common mistake is hiring an experienced operator who skips cleaning records. Ask to see a sample log they have filled.
- Check comfort with night shifts and standing for long hours before the offer, not after joining.
- Ask about safety habits such as isolating a machine before clearing a jam. Poor habits here cause injuries and downtime.
Questions about hiring a food processing machine operator
They set up, run and clean machines such as extruders and pouch fillers, check pack quality, log output and call for help when faults appear. They follow batch cards and hygiene rules throughout the shift.
It helps, but food lines add hygiene, allergen and changeover rules that other factories may not have. Test the candidate on those points, not only on running the machine.
Ask about guards, lock-out and clearing jams. Any training or certification needed depends on your plant, state and facts, so confirm it with your own adviser.
