Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- How do you decide how much rice and dal to cook when shift attendance is uncertain?
- A vendor delivers vegetables of poor quality just before lunch. What do you do?
- How have you handled a food complaint raised by an employee group or a union representative?
- Describe how you track cost per plate and what you do when it drifts above plan.
- How would you plan a festival day menu for a canteen serving staff from many regions?
- Tell us how you keep a large dining hall and serving counter clean through a busy lunch.
Hiring tips for this role
- Ask for a sample weekly menu with quantities and cost for a stated headcount. This shows planning ability better than a talk.
- A common mistake is hiring a good cook who cannot manage staff or paperwork. Test both the cooking sense and the reporting skills.
- Visit the candidate's current canteen if possible, or ask for photos of storage, serving counter and dining area.
- Check that the person is comfortable with early starts and Saturday shifts, since canteens run when the workplace runs.
