Customer Success Manager job description
A Customer Success Manager helps customers adopt a product, reach their goals and renew. The role protects recurring revenue by catching problems early and showing customers the value they receive.

Why the role exists
Subscription and software businesses earn from renewals, not only from the first sale. The Customer Success Manager guides new customers through setup, tracks usage and meets them regularly. In Indian SaaS and product companies it often sits beside support, sales and product teams.
What the person does
- Lead onboarding calls and walk new customers through setup, training and first results.
- Define success goals with each customer and review progress in scheduled meetings.
- Monitor product usage and flag accounts with falling activity or unresolved issues.
- Run business reviews that show the customer what the product has delivered.
- Collect feature requests and complaints and pass them clearly to the product team.
- Prepare renewals early and work with sales on expansion where it fits.
- Work with support to resolve serious tickets and keep the customer informed.
- Maintain health scores, notes and next steps in the customer system.
Skills and tools
- Customer onboarding and training delivery over calls and screen sharing
- Reading product usage data in tools such as Mixpanel, Metabase or the in-house dashboard
- CRM and success platforms such as HubSpot, Zoho or Freshsales
- Consultative questions that uncover the customer's real goals
- Renewal and expansion conversations that stay honest and helpful
- Writing clear summaries and next steps after each meeting
- Collaboration with product, sales and support teams
- Empathy and calm handling of frustrated users
Education and experience
Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.
- Graduation in business, technology or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience
- Preferred: experience in customer success, account management or support at a software company
- Preferred: understanding of how subscription products, renewals and usage metrics work
- Comfortable explaining technical features to non-technical users in simple language
How the work is judged
- Retention and renewal of customers assigned to the manager
- Product adoption and usage among the accounts owned
- Customer satisfaction measured through surveys and review calls
- Growth in revenue from existing customers where it is appropriate
- Quality of feedback passed to product and how often it leads to change
Where the role can lead
- Senior Customer Success Manager handling larger or strategic accounts
- Head of Customer Success leading a team and shaping the playbook
- Moving into product management, sales or solutions consulting
Interview questions to ask
Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.
- Tell us about a customer you saved who was close to leaving. What did you do first?
- How do you decide which accounts need attention this week when usage data is mixed?
- Describe how you run the first thirty days of onboarding for a new customer.
- A customer asks for a feature that is not planned. How do you respond honestly?
- How do you prepare for a renewal call with a customer who rarely logs in?
- What would you want from the product team to do this job well?
Hiring tips for this role
- Ask for examples of accounts that were at risk and how they were handled. Good candidates describe signals, actions and results clearly.
- Check data comfort. Give a small usage sheet and ask which accounts they would call first and why.
- Do not confuse this with support. Success managers plan and guide, while support responds to issues.
- Be clear on whether the role carries a renewal or upsell target. Hidden sales pressure can change who applies and who stays.
Questions about hiring a customer success manager
Support answers questions and fixes issues when customers raise them. Customer success works ahead of problems, guiding adoption and goals so customers renew. Both are needed as a product grows.
When renewals or repeat revenue matter and the founder can no longer talk to every customer. Often this happens after the first batch of paying accounts begins to approach renewal.
Enough product and data understanding to guide users and read usage is needed. Deep coding skill is rarely required. Strong communication and judgement matter more than technical depth.
