An HR consultant and business owner reviewing employee records together

Why the role exists

Customers read before they buy. The content writer plans and writes the pieces that explain what the business does, answer questions and support sales. In Indian teams the writer works with marketing, SEO, design and subject experts, and sometimes writes in more than one language.

What the person does

  • Write blog posts, website pages, case studies and email copy to a clear brief and a set deadline.
  • Interview founders, engineers and customers to collect facts and examples for articles.
  • Research the topic and check every claim, number and name before a piece goes to review.
  • Follow the brand voice guide and edit your own work for clarity, grammar and flow.
  • Work with the SEO specialist to use the right search terms in titles and headings without stuffing them.
  • Draft social media captions and scripts for short videos with the design and video team.
  • Update older articles and pages so they stay accurate and useful.
  • Track which pieces bring readers and enquiries, and suggest new topics from the data.

Skills and tools

  • Clear, correct writing in English, and Hindi or another Indian language where needed
  • Editing and proofreading, including style guide use
  • Research and fact checking from reliable sources
  • Basic SEO writing: headings, search intent and meta descriptions
  • Writing for different formats from long articles to short ads
  • CMS tools such as WordPress and document tools such as Google Docs
  • Interviewing experts and turning notes into text
  • Using AI writing aids with care and checking every output

Education and experience

Preferred, never a bar: equivalent experience counts.

  • Degree in English, journalism, mass communication or a related field preferred, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A portfolio of published work that shows range and clean writing is preferred.
  • Experience writing for the industry the business serves is useful, or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of SEO and publishing platforms is preferred but can be learned on the job.

How the work is judged

  • Accuracy and clarity of published pieces, judged by editors and subject experts.
  • On-time delivery of drafts against the content plan.
  • Reader engagement and enquiries from the content produced.
  • Consistency with the brand voice and style guide.
  • Amount of revision a draft needs before approval.

Where the role can lead

  • Senior content writer or content lead, planning topics and managing writers.
  • Content strategist or content marketing manager, owning results across formats.
  • Copy chief, editor, or specialist in a niche such as technical or financial writing.

Interview questions to ask

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order and score them against written anchors, so the decision rests on the work and not the impression.

  1. Share a piece you are proud of. What was the brief and what did you do to get it right?
  2. How would you write an article on a technical topic you know little about?
  3. We give you a product sheet. How do you turn it into a page for a first-time buyer?
  4. How do you handle feedback that contradicts your view of the best structure?
  5. What steps do you take to check facts and avoid copying from other sources?
  6. How would you use AI tools in your writing and where would you not use them?

Hiring tips for this role

  • Set a paid writing test on a real topic from your business, with a short brief. Judge structure, accuracy and how they handle gaps.
  • Read the portfolio for the writer’s own voice and not only for published links. Ask which parts they wrote and which were edited.
  • Check originality. Run samples through a plagiarism check and ask the candidate to explain sources.
  • Decide the language needs early. Writers who are strong in English may not be strong in Hindi, Kannada or other languages you need.
