Recruitment process consulting for Textile wholesalers: salesmen, godown hands and festival helpers

A textile shop hires by reference and by trust. That works until the festival rush, or until a key salesman leaves and nobody knows who could replace him.

Why recruitment process consulting matters in textile wholesalers

Most textile wholesalers hire through relatives, neighbours and other traders. The people who arrive are known and usually reliable. The weakness is speed and range. When two salesmen leave before the wedding season, or the godown needs ten more hands for a month, there is no bench to call on, and the owner hires whoever is free.

A written hiring process does not replace trust. It adds clear roles, a short test of what the person can do, and a list of sources to use before the rush. A salesman is tested on showing fabric and handling a buyer. A godown hand is tested on folding speed, reading a slip and carrying. A munim is tested on books and honesty with figures.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Write a brief for each role

Describe the work, hours, pay range and who the person reports to. Keep it to half a page, so the person can see what he is joining.

  2. 2. Build sources before the season

Note trade contacts, village networks, local institutes and former employees who might return for a season. Start asking two months before the festivals.

  3. 3. Give a short practical test

Ask a salesman to present three fabrics to a mock buyer. Ask a godown hand to open, count and fold a bale. Watch, do not interview only.

  4. 4. Check references the family way, but in writing

Speak with the person who recommended the candidate and one past employer, and note what each said. Record the date and the answer.

  5. 5. Settle the first month

Agree pay, advance rules and probation in a letter, and name a senior to guide the new person. The employee onboarding process covers the first weeks.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Count how many hires in the last year arrived through a relative and how many stayed beyond a season.
  • Check whether any role has a written description.
  • List the seasonal helpers who worked last festival and whether any can be called back.
  • Ask your senior salesman who could replace him in three months.

Questions owners ask

Prepare sources and tests in advance. A ready list of past seasonal helpers, a simple practical test and a clear day-one brief let you add people quickly. Avoid placing untested people in stock or billing roles.
