Competency and talent management for Car Garages: a skill record for every bay

A garage should know who can do what before the job card is handed over. A skill record turns the supervisor's memory into something the whole workshop can use.

Why competency and talent management matters in car garages

Allocation of jobs usually follows habit. The supervisor gives hard cars to the same two seniors, who become overloaded, while others wait for a chance to show what they can do. When one of the two is absent, the rest freeze, and the adviser has to tell the customer the car will take longer.

A skill record fixes this. It lists the common jobs in the garage and marks each technician as able to do the work alone, with supervision or not yet. It guides allocation, shows training needs and helps you spot who could one day run a bay or the floor.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Choose the jobs to list

Take twenty or so jobs that make up most of your work, from services to electrical faults. Keep the names plain so every technician understands them.

  2. 2. Mark each person with the senior

Sit with each technician and the senior and mark every job as alone, supervised or not yet. Disagreements are useful, and should be resolved by watching the job done.

  3. 3. Use the record to allot jobs

The supervisor looks at the record when handing out job cards, and moves a supervised technician onto a job when the senior is nearby, to widen the circle.

  4. 4. Link gaps to training

For each job with only one or two people able to do it alone, plan a person to learn it. The learning process can turn this into a plan.

  5. 5. Note future supervisors

Watch who explains work to others, keeps the bay tidy and is trusted by advisers. Note their names and discuss growth openly with them.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Count jobs that only one technician can do alone.
  • Ask the supervisor how job cards are allotted on a typical morning.
  • See whether any technician has done the same type of job for over a year.
  • Ask advisers which cars are held up for lack of the right hands.

Questions owners ask

Some may at first. Explain that it guides training and allocation, involve seniors in marking and let people question their marks. The record should open doors, not label people.
