Performance management and incentive design for Corporate Vehicle Leasing Companies: fair incentives for account managers, desk staff and drivers
A leasing business earns from renewals and trouble-free service, but incentives often pay only for new deals. A scheme that rewards the whole client journey keeps both clients and staff.

Account managers are typically paid a base plus a commission on new leases. Renewals are treated as part of the job. Drivers are judged by the absence of complaints, and desk staff by calls handled per hour. Each measure pulls in a different direction, and the person who rescues a client after a breakdown is rarely noticed.
A sound approach picks a few measures for each role that match what the client values. Account managers share credit for renewal and satisfaction. Drivers are assessed on punctuality, manner and client feedback. Desk staff are judged on how often a problem is solved, not only how fast the call ends. Targets are set with the person, reviewed quarterly and explained in plain terms.
How to set it up
1. List what each role should deliver
For account managers, drivers, desk and workshop staff, write three or four results that clients would notice. Drop the measures that nobody acts on.
2. Share credit for renewals
Decide how a renewal is credited between the original seller and the manager who kept the client happy. Write the rule once so disputes do not repeat.
3. Collect client feedback in a simple form
A short monthly question to the client contact about the driver and the service. Use it as a conversation starter, not a punishment.
4. Keep targets reachable and reviewed
Set quarterly goals with the person, adjust for fleet size and season, and hold a brief review. The performance management and incentive design work can set this up.
5. Pay and recognise on the same day as the measure
Give recognition promptly and explain how the incentive was worked out. A clear calculation builds trust faster than a larger figure.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask three account managers what earns them the most and whether it matches what clients value.
- Check how a renewal is credited when the seller has moved on.
- Read the last quarter of client feedback on drivers and see who is mentioned by name.
- See whether the desk measures include any about a problem actually being solved.

Questions owners ask
Often a modest recognition scheme works better than cash targets. Reward punctuality, positive client comments and a clean record, and keep the criteria simple and visible to everyone.
Include renewal and satisfaction in the incentive, and review accounts at a regular meeting. What gets measured and discussed gets attention.
A short conversation every quarter and a fuller review once a year suits most teams. Drivers who are far from the branch need more contact, not less.
