Employee onboarding process for Product engineering companies: the first weeks in a client team
A new engineer in a product engineering firm often joins a live client team within days. If the first weeks are unplanned, the client notices before you do, and the new person feels like a guest.

Joining is usually a blur: laptop and access in the first days, a quick introduction to the lead, then work on a ticket. The engineer learns client culture by trial, and the client team does not know what to expect. Questions go unasked, and the first review comment feels like a verdict.
A planned month gives structure. Before day one the lead prepares access, a buddy and a first small task. Week one covers the product, the codebase and team habits. Weeks two to four widen the work, with a mid-month check on what is unclear and a short conversation with the client contact.
How to set it up
1. Prepare before day one
The lead confirms access, a buddy, a first small task and an introduction to the client contact. HR confirms joining papers are ready.
2. Run a short company start
Cover who does what, how leave and timesheets work, and what the firm expects in client communication. Keep it under half a day.
3. Give a team walk-through
The buddy explains the product, the way the team reviews and releases, and the habits of the client. Write it down for the next joiner.
4. Set a first-month plan
Agree a small task in week one, a larger one by week three and a review at week four. Link to employee onboarding process for the full format.
5. Check in at week two and week four
Ask the engineer what is unclear, then ask the client contact. Fix gaps quickly and record the changes in the plan.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Time how long it takes a new joiner to get working access today.
- Ask the last two joiners who they went to with questions in week one.
- Check whether the client contact was told a new person was coming.
- See if a written team guide exists and when it was last updated.

Questions owners ask
Explain the cost of a rough start. A few days of structured joining usually saves more time than it uses. Offer a first small billable task so both sides see progress.
A peer one level above, who has recently worked on the same client team and has time to answer questions. Avoid the busiest senior engineer.
Send equipment and access early, hold the walk-through by video, set daily short check-ins for the first week and plan a visit or call with the team in the second.
