Hire Qualified Professionals and Trainees on One Dependable Process

A professional firm hires in two very different ways: experienced managers and associates who must be productive soon, and trainees who are chosen for potential and taught the craft. We help you run both pipelines with clear requisitions, assessment of real work, credential checks and joining dates that fit your busy seasons. The partners still make the hiring decisions. We make sure each decision rests on the same evidence.

The starting point

Is Hiring Run by Whoever Has the Time?

In many firms recruitment is squeezed between client work. Partners interview on instinct, a good candidate waits while diaries clear, and the new joiner turns out to lack a skill nobody tested. Trainee intake, which depends on institute and campus calendars, is often handled separately and late.

We help you give each hire a defined route from requisition to joining, with the evidence recorded.

You may be experiencing:

  • Requisitions raised verbally, so nobody can say how many roles are open or who approved them.
  • Experienced hires judged by conversation and reputation, without a sample of real work such as a draft opinion, a working paper or a design review.
  • Credentials, registrations and prior-employer references checked after the offer, or not at all.
  • Trainee and article intake that misses the institute calendar or exceeds what the practice can supervise.
  • Candidates lost because several partners need to meet them and diaries do not line up.
  • Offers made without agreed grade and band, so pay is negotiated person by person.
  • A staffing business sourcing for client orders and for its own team with the same two recruiters.

What we can help with

Our Recruitment Services for Professional Services Firms

  • Requisition and Approval Route

A single route for raising a vacancy: the practice, the level, the work it covers, the budget and the approving partner. Open positions are tracked in one list.

  • Role Profiles by Level

Short profiles stating the technical work, client handling and supervision each level carries, so candidates and interviewers describe the same job.

  • Sourcing for Experienced Hires

Professional networks, institute and association channels, referrals from partners and direct approach, adapted to whether the vacancy is a tax manager, a litigation associate or a structural engineer.

  • Trainee and Article Intake

Plan intake against the institute and campus calendars, set the selection steps, and match the batch size to the supervision available in each practice.

  • Work-Sample Assessment

Design a short, realistic exercise for each role family, such as reviewing a contract, reconciling a ledger, critiquing a proposal or reading a drawing set, and score it on an agreed sheet.

  • Structured Interviews and Scorecards

Fix the panel, the questions and the scorecard, and agree how many partners must meet a candidate, so decisions are comparable and quicker.

  • Credential and Reference Verification

Define which membership, registration, qualification and employment checks apply to each role, who carries them out and what happens before an offer is released. Confirm any obligations specific to your profession with a qualified adviser.

  • Offer and Joining Management

Link the offer to the grade and band, keep in touch through the notice period, and fix the joining date around the filing and audit calendar.

Step by step

How We Work

  1. Understand the Firm and the Vacancies

We discuss the practices, the roles, the budget and the dates by which people must be productive, including the next filing or audit peak.

  2. Define the Profile and the Test

We agree the must-have skills, credentials and the work sample that will separate candidates.

  3. Source and Screen

We reach candidates through the agreed channels, screen them against the profile and present a shortlist with notes.

  4. Coordinate Assessment and Decision

We schedule the work sample and interviews around partner diaries, collect scorecards and support a decision within an agreed time.

  5. Offer, Verify and Join

We carry the offer, run the checks you have chosen and follow the candidate through the notice period. We record a baseline first and report against it.

The difference

Hiring That Partners Can Trust

A defined recruitment process helps the firm to:

We do not promise outcomes. We record a baseline before work starts, covering time from requisition to offer, offer acceptance and joining rates, and the stage at which candidates drop out, and report against it, so you can see what changed and what did not.

  • See every open position, its approval and its stage in one list.
  • Judge candidates on a sample of their work as well as on conversation.
  • Compare candidates across practices on the same scorecard.
  • Bring in trainees on a planned calendar that matches supervision capacity.
  • Finish verification before the joining date.
  • Cut down the partner time spent on coordination.

How it usually shows up in professional services

Professional firms usually hire through partner networks, referrals, campus drives and a few agencies. Experienced hires are often judged on a conversation with one or two partners, and the standard is the partner's own impression. Technical assessment varies by practice and is sometimes skipped for someone who comes recommended. Trainee and article intake runs on a calendar tied to institute results and campus placement, and the firm competes with larger names for the same candidates. Qualification checks, membership validity and prior-firm references are done unevenly, and offers are fixed by whoever is negotiating. Joining dates are rarely planned around the busy season, so a new person can arrive at the peak with no one free to settle them in. Notice periods in senior hires also push joining dates well past the point where the need arose.

Common challenges

Where it goes wrong in professional services

  • Judgement of one partner

Candidates are accepted or rejected on the impression of one or two people with no shared standard.

  • Technical tests vary

Some practices test the work and others rely on the cv and a recommendation.

  • Credentials checked unevenly

Qualification, membership and prior-employer checks depend on who remembers to ask.

  • Joining lands on the peak

New hires arrive when no one has time to induct them and begin by being left alone.

A better process

What a working version looks like

  1. 01

    Approve the requisition

A short form stating practice, level, the work it covers and the budget, signed by the practice head and the managing partner. The recruitment process sets out the steps.

  2. 02

    Assess the work

A technical exercise or case relevant to the practice, scored by two reviewers against a stated standard.

  3. 03

    Run two pipelines

A calendar for trainee and campus intake, and a separate route for experienced and lateral hires.

  4. 04

    Verify before the offer

Qualification, membership status and references confirmed in writing before the offer is released.

  5. 05

    Plan the joining date

Agree the date with the practice so someone is ready to receive the new person.

What to check this week

  • Read the last few hires and note the assessment used for each.
  • Ask who checked the qualification and membership of the latest joiner.
  • Find the offers made last season and see how many converted to joiners.
  • Check how the salary offered to the last senior hire was decided.
  • List the joining dates of recent hires against your busiest weeks.

Confirm with a qualified professional. What applies depends on your establishment, your state and your sector, and it changes. This page describes a practice; it does not state a legal position.

Questions on this, in professional services

We can support searches for managers, directors and specialists through targeted approach and assessment. Lateral partner hiring involves commercial terms and client portfolios that the partners must negotiate themselves, so we support the process and the evidence, not the terms.

The general method — what recruitment and talent acquisition covers, the questions it answers and what an engagement produces — is the same whatever the sector, and is set out on the workforce and recruitment process page. What is above is the part that differs for professional services.

Where to start
