Attendance, shift and leave process for Seafood processors: calling the line when the catch lands
A processor cannot choose its hours. The roster has to handle sudden landings, long nights and slack days fairly, with rest and leave protected.

When a boat or truck arrives, the supervisor phones around, workers come in from hostels and rooms and the line starts. Next day the same people may be sent home at noon. Workers do not know whether to expect eight hours or fourteen, and those who live far away lose pay on slack days and sleep on busy ones.
A fair system starts with a standing call list by line, a clear order for who is called and a record of who worked what. Overtime rotates. Rest after a long night is built in. On slack days, the plant says early whether work is cancelled, so people can plan.
How to set it up
1. Make a call list for each line
Names, numbers and hostel details, with an order of calling that is rotated weekly. Share the rule with workers.
2. Set rules for long and short days
Agree notice times, maximum hours and what pay applies if a landing is cancelled after workers arrive. Confirm the legal limits with a qualified professional.
3. Rotate overtime fairly
Record who worked extra and give the next opportunity to those with less. A supervisor cannot choose favourites.
4. Protect rest and leave
After a very long shift, a later start the next day. Plan leave around the season and fix weekly offs. See the grievance process for complaints.
5. Review monthly
Compare hours by worker and line. Look for people worked far above or below the rest, and ask why.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Check whether workers know what time they will finish.
- Compare overtime hours across workers on the same line.
- Ask what happens to pay when a landing is cancelled.
- See how many workers worked more than two long nights in a row.

Questions owners ask
Tell workers as soon as you know, through the call list and the hostel warden, and say the expected start. Late notice should be the exception, and cancellations should also be told early.
Check the legal and contractual position with a qualified professional. In practice, a fair rotation and fixed notice rules reduce refusals because people can plan.
Say early that work is cancelled or reduced, use the time for training or cleaning where appropriate and explain how pay is treated. Silence breeds suspicion and exits.
