Employee onboarding process for Animation Studios: a pipeline induction for artists
A new artist is productive when they know the pipeline, the naming rules and who approves what. Onboarding should get them to a first approved shot in days, not weeks.

Animation pipelines are full of small rules. Files are named a certain way, versions are saved to certain folders, notes come through a certain tool, and shots are handed to the next department by a certain step. A new artist who has not been told breaks something in the first week and loses confidence.
The fix is a short, practical induction. A setup checklist, a walk through the pipeline, a first small shot with a buddy and a check at the end of the first week. For remote artists, the same plan runs over video, with extra care that they know whom to ask.
How to set it up
1. Prepare the setup before day one
Software licences, folders, access and a machine or remote setup ready, so the artist does not lose the first day waiting.
2. Walk through the pipeline
A one hour session on stages, handovers, naming rules, versions and the review process, with a printed or shared one page diagram.
3. Assign a buddy
A named colleague in the same department who answers questions in the first fortnight and reviews the first work.
4. Give a first small shot
A real but forgiving task that touches the main steps of the pipeline, completed within the first week.
5. Review at the end of week one
A fifteen minute talk on what worked, what was unclear and what to add to the induction for the next joiner.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Ask the last three joiners what slowed them down in their first week.
- Check how long it took each of them to deliver an approved shot.
- See whether remote artists received the same induction as in-house ones.
- Count the naming or version errors reported in a new artist's first month.

Questions owners ask
A morning for the main session and a week for the first shot. A longer plan will not be followed in a busy production. Keep the content to the pipeline and the people.
They need the pipeline, naming rules and review process, but not the full set of company topics. A shorter version on the same format works well and prevents file and version errors.
The pipeline coordinator or a senior from the department, supported by the buddy. Leads should join for the first session so the new artist meets them early.
