Attendance, shift and leave for Contract Pharma Manufacturers: shifts that follow client plans and rushes
A contract pharma plant plans around several clients, and a client can move an order or add a rush at short notice. Attendance and shift rules must flex without wearing the floor down.

Plans change when a client moves a date. A shift gets extended, a weekend is added and leave that was agreed is quietly cancelled. The same people carry each rush, and they begin to arrive late or go absent after a hard week. Changeovers between clients' products need line clearance and cleaning, and they are done badly when the line is short staffed.
A workable design keeps a standard roster and a clear rule for changes. Rush work is shared across a larger pool, paid fairly and paid promptly. Leave is protected once approved except in agreed circumstances. Cover for changeover roles is planned by naming who can clear a line for each client product, so the changeover does not rest on one person.
How to set it up
1. Write the standard roster and the change rule
Fix the normal shift pattern. State how much notice staff get for changes and who can approve extra hours.
2. Share rush work across a pool
Name the people who can take extra shifts and rotate them. Avoid having the same few absorb every rush.
3. Protect approved leave
Agree the rare cases in which approved leave can be recalled and how it is compensated. Tell staff in advance.
4. Name changeover cover per client
List who can clear a line for each client's product. Keep two people for each. Use attendance, shift and leave design to set the rules.
5. Read attendance patterns after rushes
Look at lateness and absence in the week after a rush. If the pattern jumps, adjust the planning, not just the warnings.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- Count shifts extended or added at under a day's notice last month.
- List who worked the most extra hours in the last quarter.
- Count approved leaves cancelled in the last year.
- Check how many people can clear a line for each client.

Questions owners ask
Plan changeovers into the schedule, name trained people for line clearance and avoid stacking several in one shift. Treat it as skilled work.
Use a pool, rotate the call and pay on time. If the same few people always carry the rush, absences and resignations follow.
Avoid it. If it is unavoidable, set the rule in advance, compensate fairly and keep it rare, or staff will stop trusting leave approval.
