Learning and development process for Commercial Printers: a staged path to colour and register skill

Colour and register judgement lives with one or two senior operators. A staged learning process moves that skill to others while the jobs keep running.

Why learning and development process matters in commercial printers

Assistants wash up, carry paper and hold sheets for years without being taught colour balance. The senior operator is too busy to explain, and the trainee learns from whatever job is on the press. When the senior operator is away, a reprint follows, and the owner finds that no second person can match a colour.

Good looks like a short list of skills in order: sheet handling, register, ink balance, matching to a proof. A named assistant is paired with the senior operator on live jobs and signed off at each step. Prepress and finishing staff also get a day on the press so they see what an artwork fault costs.

How to set it up

  1. 1. Ask the senior operator what only he does

List the colour and register tasks others cannot do unaided, in his own words. This becomes the target skills list for the learning plan.

  2. 2. Write the skills in order

From sheet handling and washing up to ink balance and matching a proof. Keep it to one page with a sign-off space for each skill.

  3. 3. Pair a named assistant with him

On live jobs, not only on spare time. The assistant sets up one part of a job each week while the senior watches. The learning and development process can plan the sequence.

  4. 4. Give prepress and finishing a day on the press

Prepress staff see what bleed and font errors do at the press, and binders see how press delays reach them.

  5. 5. Review progress each month

Compare the assistant's skills against the list and adjust jobs. Link each sign-off to a pay step so progress counts.

Check these first

Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.

  • Write down which colour tasks only your senior operator can do.
  • Check how many assistants have been in the same role for more than two years.
  • Count reprints in the last month that began with colour or register.
  • Ask prepress staff when they last stood at the press during a run.

Questions owners ask

It takes a good while and varies by person. Judge progress by skills signed off on live jobs, not by time served. Start early, since it cannot be rushed in a crisis.
