Learning and development process for Label Manufacturers: from assistant to press operator
A narrow web press is run by an operator and an assistant, and the unit has no spare people. Training the assistant properly is how a label unit protects its changeovers and its colour matches.

Share your requirementsWhy learning and development process matters in label manufacturers
Assistants in a label unit learn by watching the operator and are left to carry reels, wipe plates and fetch inks. They see the colour match and the registration set up but are rarely asked to do it. After a year they know enough to leave for a better press elsewhere, and the unit loses both the person and the money spent. The operator, who is the only one who knows the repeat jobs, is never asked to teach because the day is full.
Good looks like a short ladder for assistants: carrying and cleaning, loading and unwinding, plate and anilox changes, changeover set up, colour match under supervision, running alone. Each step has two or three things to show on real jobs. The operator teaches in agreed slots, and an assistant who reaches the next step gets a recognised role and pay change.
How to set it up
1. Write the ladder for assistants
List six steps from fetching and cleaning to running a job alone. Under each step, note two or three things the assistant must show, such as a plate change without damage or a repeat colour match.
2. Pick teaching slots, not spare time
Set aside the first thirty minutes of a changeover for the assistant to do the task while the operator watches. Write down what was taught and corrected.
3. Teach colour reference handling
Show where the approved samples are kept, how they are labelled and how to compare under the right light. Make at least two people able to match a repeat colour.
4. Link steps to pay and title
Name each step, such as assistant, senior assistant, junior operator. Give a small pay change at each step. Say so on day one, so the person sees a future here.
5. Keep a one page record per person
Mark each step as shown with a date and who watched. See learning and development process for how to link training to roles.
Check these first
Before changing anything, find out what is true today. These take an afternoon and use your own records.
- List assistants and the highest ladder step each has reached.
- Count changeovers last week where the assistant did any set up task.
- Check how many people can match repeat colours without the senior operator.
- Read the last two assistant resignations for mention of progress.

Questions owners ask
Start with the simplest task on a calm job and let the operator do the hard parts. Over a few weeks the assistant takes more of the set up, and the changeover usually gets faster, not slower.
Yes. People leave when they cannot see a next step. Showing the steps and the reward at the start gives them something to work towards in your unit rather than in a rival's.
At least two trained people, with a clear storage and labelling method. If only one person can match a repeat job, the unit loses a day whenever that person is away.
